The venue is located 1.9 miles to the North West of the city centre in the Green Point area of the city.

It was opened in the 1920s as Green Point Stadium.

A new stadium called Cape Town Stadium was built nearby and opened in December 2009 in time for the FIFA Football World Cup 2010 with a capacity of 55,000.

Part of the original stadium was kept and is now part of the new Green Point Athletics Stadium which has a 7,000 capacity and opened in 2013.
