Album Notes By dltourhistory

The fourth studio album released by the band and their most successful. Following on from Rick's 1984 accident it was a massive success and would go on to sell over 20 million copies. At least 12 million while they were still promoting it in early 1989. Mutt Lange again produced and was also heavily involved in songwriting and arranging. He took his production style and mixing techniques to a new level which would be copied by many other producers for years to come. No less than seven singles and videos were released with five of the six UK singles making the top 20. 'Love Bites' became their first US number one hit. 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' would help to sell 4 million copies of the album in 4 months during the summer of 1988 in the USA alone. Ten years later in 1998 the band would be one of the first to receive a Diamond Award from the RIAA to mark 10 million copies sold in the USA of the album. It remains one of the biggest selling hard rock albums of all time.

The Japanese edition of the album had an extra track, future UK B-Side 'Love And Affection' live from Tilburg, Holland in June 1987.

The back sleeve of all CD editions featured the plain computer style background and red triangle without the wierd faces. The UK CD did not have song lengths by the titles on the back cover but only on the back of the inner booklet. They were printed on both in the US although some of the lengths differed by a couple of seconds. Initial copies of the album in the UK featured an insert promoting the previous albums. In both the UK and US special Limited Edition picture disc versions were released in December 1987. The US version had the alien faces with Def Leppard and Hysteria logo on one side, computer background and a large red band pic on the other. The UK edition came in a die-cut album cardboard sleeve with five holes cut out. One half of the disc had the alien faces with no logos, the other had the computer backdrop with live pics of each band member to match up to the cover holes.
