Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell was interviewed earlier today by Belfast radio and performed a solo acoustic song.

Vivian spoke live in studio to Gerry Kelly on BBC Radio Ulster in Belfast ahead of tonight's awards show.

Vivian talked about Belfast, the OH YEAH Legend music award, his first bands Teaser/Sweet Savage, NWOBHM/Def Leppard, DIO, his daughters, Thin Lizzy, tattoos/image, side projects/Last In Line, Riverdogs, Irish Guitarists/Gary Moore/Rory Gallagher and his awards speech.

He also performed a solo acoustic version of 'Hysteria' after being interviewed. The first time he has performed a Def Leppard song solo (without a backing band). It included a few subtle lyrics changes.

Listen to the full 17 minute interview along with the full Hysteria performance below.

The Gerry Kelly Show - Vivian Campbell Interview Quotes

Belfast

"Beeb here a couple of days but still hammered with jet lag, as always. And heading up to Donegal probably on Monday. Family have a home up there, I've been going to Donegal since I was four years old. It's always great to go there."

"Oh absolutely, the city has come on leaps and bounds indeed, yeah. And it's all good I'm happy to say. Who would have thought girls in short skirts in wine bars and stuff like that you know. Didn't have that in my day."

OH YEAH Legend Award/Belfast Music Scene

"It's unbelievable actually I think this whole thing about the OH YEAH award, I'm very flattered by it. But I think more than anything else it speaks volumes about how far this country has come. And not just the country, the city, the creative community. You know the arts community. The fact that we're having an awards show and the OH YEAH music centre it's such a great resource for upcoming musicians. When I was starting I couldn't even find a guitar teacher. I had to teach myself. I went to the Ulster Hall and watched Rory Gallagher and bought his album and dropped the needle and tried to figure out how he was playing this and that and the other you know."

"And in many ways that was a good thing for me because I really think when you're a self taught musician you really get inside it. You have to learn the inner workings of it you know. Necessity being the mother of invention and all of that. As opposed to somebody just showing you how to do something. So I'm not bemoaning that fact but it's incredible how far this city has come."

OH YEAH Legend Award/Speech

"That's the only thing I'm concerned about. As I was saying to you earlier, I have been. I've had a long career. I've been in so many bands."

But you've had awards before

"No. When I was with Hillsborough Boys at 12 years old playing football, that was it. Well I mean they give you record awards but that's not like an award ceremony. You know and any time with Def Leppard we're doing anything public Joe's the figurehead. So I just get to stand there."

So you are a bit nervy about tonight?

"I am. I don't wanna bore people with a long winded speech. And I don't wanna forget to mention someone you know. So it's like you're damned if you do, damned if you don't almost you know. 'Cause there's a lot of people I need to thank, should thank for all of it you know. It means a lot to me yeah. I mean I don't put a lot of stock into awards normally. You know I've lived in LA and everyone pats themselves on the back a lot there. So it's not something I would put a lot of stock in normally but this means a lot to me because it's from the people of Northern Ireland. You know and it's a recognition of my overall career."
