The venue is located in the centre of the city not far from the River Tees.

It was opened in 1913 and was also called Pavilion Theatre and Club Marimba.

The original venue hosted concerts from the mid 1970s until at least 1982.

It is now known as The Arena and is a nightclub and hosted concerts under this name between 1991 and 2016.

Two UK record company A&R men attended the show having seen the band in Retford.

One was David Bates from Phonogram who would go on to sing the band the following month.
