Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to—yes, you know who—it's The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Great to be with you this week. I'm coming to you all the way from Viva Las Vegas.
I'm in Vegas, baby!
I'm gonna tell you all about last night—which was epic—later on. But right now, I'm in town today (a day off for me).
I'm in town to watch a legend—a living legend—tonight, in just a few hours' time.
We'll be turning up to watch the gentleman that we are about to hear right now.
So, ladies and gentlemen, here he is in all his glory:
Sir Paul McCartney with Wings.
Paul McCartney / Wings
Yeah, I wonder if he'll open with that number tonight. When I saw him in Dublin about 20 years ago, he actually did—and it's a fantastic way to start a show.
Paul McCartney there, from the 1975 album Venus and Mars, with:
"Venus and Mars / Rock Show".
The Doobie Brothers
Now, I mentioned at the top of the show that last night was epic—and indeed, it was.
We were in Santa Monica, which is ironically the place where Def Leppard played their first-ever show in America, 45 years ago.
It was for Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, from The Who’s Teenage Cancer Trust charity show, which is held here once a year.
This year, it's to raise money for the firemen who were there and putting their lives on the line during that devastating fire in the Malibu Palisades area of California about 18 months ago.
And what a lineup!, The Who (featuring Eddie Vedder), our good selves, Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, John Fogerty (once of Creedence Clearwater Revival), The Doobie Brothers.
Gonna feature some of their music all the way through the show tonight, starting off with The Doobies.
And before that, we heard The Doobie Brothers themselves, from that amazing album The Captain and Me, with:
"China Grove".
Peter Frampton
I'm thinking that this next song is called "Doobie Wah", because it actually sounds very much like The Doobie Brothers when it starts off.
But it is Peter Frampton.
It’s taken from a collection called Classics Volume 12.
I doubt the other 11 volumes are him, so it must be just a series of classic artists.
Either way, the song is called:
"Doobie Wah".
KISS
Now, this next song has got nothing to do with the Teenage Cancer Trust gig.
I'm only playing it because I've always thought the intro of this song sounded a little bit like "China Grove" by The Doobie Brothers.
Believe it or not—this is KISS.
And before that, with a slight resemblance to "China Grove" by The Doobie Brothers, we heard KISS, from their 1976 epic album Destroyer, with:
"Flaming Youth".
John Fogerty
Yes, performing last night at the Teenage Cancer Trust charity show, John Fogerty (once of Creedence Clearwater Revival) recently re-recorded some of his classic songs for an album called Legacy.
And that is John's version of:
"Fortunate Son".
You're listening to The Joe Elliott Show—this week, coming to you all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada.
Coming up: the stars of last night's show—The Who.
The Who
And before that, we heard The Who, who have just possibly played their last ever US gig—last night.
And this next song has been in their set for the first time ever in their career.
What an amazing feeling, to think that we just saw their last-ever American show.
From the 1971 album Who's Next, we just heard:
"The Song Is Over".
Mick Jagger
But first, just moving away from the Teenage Cancer Trust gig for a little while...
Because the greatest show on any streaming service is back on—yes, series five of Slow Horses.
What a show.
So, I thought I wanted to play the theme tune.
It is Mick Jagger with:
"Strange Game".
Be-Bop Deluxe
Now, here are a couple more songs that have got absolutely nothing to do with last night whatsoever.
This is Be-Bop Deluxe.
And before that, we heard the wonderful Be-Bop Deluxe, from the 1976 album Sunburst Finish, with the 2018 remix version of:
"Sleep That Burns".
Babe Ruth
I saw both of these bands back in the mid-70s, and they did not disappoint.
That is Babe Ruth, from an album called First Base, with:
"Wells Fargo".
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends—all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada—is about it for this particular week.
What a vibe these last few days have been—and will be.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
So as I like to say—please, don't touch that dial. Don't go anywhere.
Why would you ever want to, anyway?
So until then, I shall leave you with this...
He guested with The Who last night but is a star in his own right and with his own band.
From the album Earthling, this is:
Eddie Vedder with "The Power of Right".
Until next week - See ya!
