Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Great to be with you once again!
We've got some great music lined up tonight — in my humble opinion, sixty minutes’ worth of some stellar stuff, including some outer stellar stuff like this one. Absolutely brand spanking new — Michael Monroe!
Michael Monroe
I’ve always loved that guy, ever since I first met him back in 1984 at The Marquee, when he was fronting Hanoi Rocks. That is brand new Michael Monroe.
The album is out early next year — it’s called Outer Stellar, and the song we just heard is the first single from that album, “Rock and Roll Heart.”
Perfect Beasts
So here’s another brand new piece of music for you from a band that features a bass player who might just happen to be a DJ on Planet Rock.
Now, he’s asked me politely not to mention him — so Darren, I promise I won’t mention you… oops!
This is The Perfect Beasts.
And before that, we heard The Perfect Beasts, whose bass player shall remain anonymous for the time being. The album for these guys is out early next year, and their first single — just out now — is “Three’s a Crowd.”
Witchforce
That song is not new, but it’s new enough — it came out towards the end of last year. It’s new to me. It was thrown my way by our very good friend Ms.Emm Gryner, who has an affiliation with fellow Canadians, and apparently, the singer in that band has Canadian roots.
So I guess she just trolls the internet looking for Canadian bands to discover that might fit well on my show — and I couldn’t agree more! It has, to me, a little bit of a Jenny Haan’s Lion or Babe Ruth sound to it, for those people of a certain age who might remember those artists from the mid-70s.
It is a band called Witch Force. The song is “Into the Woods.”
Joe Elliott/Phil Collen (Ft. Paul Rodgers/Simon Kirke)
Now, if you’re a regular listener to my show, you’ll have heard me banging on for the last month or two about this Bad Company tribute album called Can’t Get Enough, which features the likes of Halestorm, Slash with Myles Kennedy, of course Blackberry Smoke, The Struts, Dirty Honey, Black Stone Cherry, and myself and Phil doing a song with Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke.
I wasn’t allowed to play it because the album’s not out until November. Well, I’m glad to say I was completely, 100%, totally wrong about that — it’s actually out this month! And I’ve been given the thumbs-up from the label to play this particular song for you.
So here it is — myself and Phil, with Paul and Simon from Bad Company, and our version of “Seagull.”
And before that, you heard myself and Phil featuring Simon Kirke on drums, and a few choice phrases from the wonderful Paul Rodgers. It’s taken from the tribute album to Bad Company, Can’t Get Enough. It’s a song featured on their debut album back in 1974 — that most brilliant of songs, “Seagull.”
Stephen Stills
You know, I just love it when you hear a song on a TV show and you think, “Well, that’s pretty good — I wonder who that is?” So you Shazam it, and then you go, “Oh, I should have known that!” But you didn’t, did you? No, I didn’t.
Stephen Stills — that’s who I discovered — from his debut solo album of the same name, recorded fifty-five years ago back in 1970 in London, featuring some stellar guests: Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and on the song that we just heard, Jimi Hendrix. The song is “Old Times, Good Times.”
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, we’re gonna get all down and dirty with Meat Loaf.
Meatloaf
And before that, we heard Meat Loaf from 1977 — I believe it was. The album is Bat Out of Hell, one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. The song we heard: “Paradise by the Dashboard Light.”
Robert Plant
Now, Robert Plant has always been a huge fan of what we call authentic blues, and he does fantastic justice to this particular song — originally recorded by Blind Willie Johnson back in 1930. It’s been covered many times, including by the likes of Tom Jones, but this is the boss version for me.
It’s from his brand new album called Saving Grace. The song is “Soul of a Man.”
Supertramp
Okay, so these next couple of tunes feature the same singer, but from two different eras of his career. The first one I’m sure you’ll be way more familiar with — this is Supertramp.
And before that, we heard Supertramp, featuring of course Roger Hodgson’s wonderful vocals, on this particular tune taken from their 1975 album Crisis? What Crisis? — the song “The Meaning.”
Argosy
Talk about getting lost in the annals of rock! Here’s a song that came out in 1969 and disappeared without a trace. It’s by a band who never made an album — just one single.
The band were called Argosy. Now, it features on bass the legendary session player Caleb Quaye, who worked for the likes of Elton John and Lou Reed, with D. Murray on drums. Now we’re getting closer — Elton John on piano, and vocals by Roger Hodgson, soon to be the co-lead singer, if you like, of the band Supertramp.
So I thought I’d give it a spin. The song is called “Mr. Boyd.”
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week. It’s been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don’t go anywhere!
Until then, I shall leave you with this. Having just watched a Best of 1975 show on TV, I was astonished to read in the caption at the bottom that this was the only number one that these guys ever had — from the album On the Level.
This is Status Quo, and “Down Down.”
Until next week - see ya!
