The Joe Elliott Show - 1st November 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Always a pleasure — great to be with you.

Got some great stuff lined up tonight, in my humble opinion, starting off with this beauty from one of the great contributors to punk from the Emerald Isle.

This is The Boomtown Rats, produced by none other than Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who just three years later would be producing Highway to Hell for AC/DC.

Boomtown Rats

That is The Boomtown Rats, taken from their greatest hits album Back to Boomtown.

The song is Mary of the Fourth Form.

Slade

Now, if you listen to my show often enough, you’ll hear me rattle on about certain bands — like Bowie, Sparks, and specifically T. Rex — maybe having B-sides that are actually better than their A-sides.

Well, there’s one British band that’s got so many B-sides, they actually released a double album of them.

This is Slade, featuring a plethora of what you might call non-standard rock and roll instrumentation.

But boy, does it work well.

And before that we heard Slade, from an album called B-Sides — an album chock-a-block with “the other side,” nineteen of them altogether.

What we just heard there was the B-side of Cum On Feel the Noize — it’s I’m Me, I’m Now, and That’s All.

The Who

That is The Who with Join Together.

Aerosmith/Yungblud

Okay, so what do you get if you put together the bad boys of Boston with a young kid from Doncaster?

Well, you get this.

And before that — well, that’s what you get when you mix Boston, Massachusetts with Doncaster in South Yorkshire.

You get Aerosmith and Youngblood together on an EP called One More Time.

The song we heard — and what a song it is — My Only Angel.

Ace Frehley

As we all know now, some very sad news came in last week on the passing of Ace Frehley, original lead guitarist for KISS.

I didn’t get a chance to honour him on last week’s show, so I’m actually going to feature him a couple of times tonight.

What we just heard there was Ace, from his debut solo album, when KISS all released albums on the same day.

Each individual member released a solo album in 1978, and Ace really had the big hit single — a cover of an old Hello song — called New York Groove.

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up — a lesson in gravity from Ian Hunter.

Ian Hunter

And before that, we heard Ian Hunter, from his eponymously titled debut album back in 1975, with a wonderful bit of work called It Ain’t Easy When You Fall / Shades Off.

Uriah Heep

From that wonderful album that is Demons and Wizards, that is Uriah Heep with The Wizard.

Halestorm

Now, last week I featured myself and Phil with Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke’s contribution to the Bad Company tribute album Can’t Get Enough.

This week it’s the turn of Halestorm.

And before that we heard Halestorm and Lzzy Hale — what a voice.

It’s no wonder Skid Row wanted to hang on to her.

She sounds absolutely incredible on this particular song.

Again, as I said, it’s from the Bad Company tribute album Can’t Get Enough, and it’s Halestorm’s version of Shooting Star.

Patti Smith

Yep — sisters are doing it for themselves, boy.

I remember seeing U2 about eight or nine years ago, and they used this song as walk-on music for their show — and the crowd absolutely went nuts.

It is Patti Smith, from an album called Dream of Life, with People Have the Power.

Show Outro

And that, my dear friends, is about it for this week.

It’s been a real pleasure, as always.

I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don’t go anywhere.

Until then, I shall leave you with this.

I mentioned earlier on I was going to feature him twice — so here he is again: the late, great Ace Frehley, once again from his debut solo album back in 1978.

This is a wonderful bit of instrumental work called Fractured Mirror.

Rock in peace, Ace Frehley.
