Show Intro
Evening all, and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on — yes, you know where — Planet Rock. Where else would you want to be?
Great to be with you.
I have had such a mad week since we were last together. That Who gig last Friday night was just the start of an incredible weekend for me. I'll tell you all about it in a little while, but first, the breaking news this week...
How could we ignore this band?
Welcome back, Rush.
Rush
I wonder if Anika Nilles can write lyrics? It is she that has taken on the unenviable task of filling Neil Peart's shoes — or should I say, sitting on his drum stool.
Rush are back together to play some live shows now.
Are we expecting new music? Probably not. But with the vast back catalogue that Rush have, they could probably play for the next 10 years and never play the same set twice. So deep is their catalogue of songs — and maybe they will go deep. Maybe we’ll hear things like Working Man. Maybe we’ll hear things like Finding My Way, which is where I came in.
I heard them played every week at The Improvisions in Sheffield Top Rank back in '76, and even by then, that song was three years old.
Now, let’s just take what we’ve been given — Rush back on the road. Let’s hope that they put some gigs together for the UK and Europe. For right now, I believe it’s just Canada and the USA.
But great to have you back, boys — and I thought I would celebrate it by playing one of their more recent pieces of work.
It is from the album Clockwork Angels.
This is The Anarchist.
Paul McCartney
Now, I mentioned at the top of the show that last Friday night saw Def Leppard sharing a stage with the likes of Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, The Who, John Fogerty, and The Doobie Brothers — and what a fantastic night it was for the Teenage Cancer Trust USA show.
The following morning, however, saw me jumping on a plane and flying up to Las Vegas to watch a living legend perform for almost three hours at the age of 83.
In a few minutes’ time — his original Fab Four.
But right now — here is Paul McCartney.
Yeah, truly incredible times last weekend.
65,000 people in a sold-out stadium in Las Vegas, watching an 83-year-old man singing his heart out for almost three hours — and what a set list. It’s impossible to pick anything that wouldn’t work. I mean, I could have played all of them.
But I’ve gone with basically four songs — but it’s kind of two, if you like, because three of them are all one song that really resonated with me on the night. Almost brought me to tears, I’ll be honest. Hands in the air. It really was very emotional watching this guy perform.
And before that, the man himself — after The Beatles split — when he formed his second band Wings. From the 1973 album Band on the Run, we heard 1985.
As I said, an absolute living legend.
The Beatles
What we just heard there — from the Abbey Road album — is The Beatles with:
Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End
Hozier
24 hours later, I would go and see a legend in the making — no kidding.
This is Hozier.
And before that — I kid you not — you’ve got to see this guy live. He’s absolutely incredible.
It is Hozier, and what we heard just there was from the latest album Unreal Unearth. The song is the most beautiful bit of work: Francesca.
Aerosmith
Well, it’s nice to think that Aerosmith might rear its beautiful head once again and do some shows. They’ve got a five-track EP out with YungBlud, so there’s new music.
And I thought tonight that I would play something from the latter part of their career. Their career always seems to be split into two: there’s the post-MTV, and there’s the pre-MTV.
I’ve gone with the latter stuff, because I’m a really big fan of the album Nine Lives. The song we just heard — Hole in My Soul.
You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show, right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up — a little bit of reincarnation with Ian Hunter.
Ian Hunter
And before that — Ian Hunter, from 1979, from the magnificently titled You’re Never Alone with a Schizophrenic.
We heard Life After Death.
Curved Air
Good God, that takes me back a long way. I remember buying that as a second-hand ex-jukebox single, with a hole punched out in the middle — all scratched and horrible — but it had to do, because, well, it’s all we knew back in 1970 when I think I bought it.
It is taken these days from a much cleaned-up and much better-sounding retrospective anthology collection.
It is Curved Air with Back Street Luv.
The Babys
All right then — get them Union Jacks waving.
This is The Babys.
And before that, we heard The Babys, from — I believe — 1980. The album is Union Jacks. The song we heard: Midnight Rendezvous.
Jeff Beck
I think it’s fair to say that that album was a huge influence on the first Led Zeppelin album. It’s to be expected, though, because Jimmy Page was great friends with the leader of said band.
It is Jeff Beck — The Jeff Beck Group, in fact — featuring Ronnie Wood on bass, and Rod Stewart, of course, on lead vocals.
Taken from the album Truth, it is the old Yardbirds classic: Shapes of Things.
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, that’s about it for this week.
It’s been a real pleasure, as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time.
So until then... oh, hang on.
Did I mention at the top of the show that I’m still in Los Angeles, having just enjoyed a couple of very special days where Def Leppard were awarded a Hollywood Walk of Fame star — inducted by none other than our very good friend, Mr. Jon Bon Jovi?
I didn’t?
Well, one doesn’t like to show off, does one?
So until next week, I shall leave you with this, from the album Black and White.
This is The Stranglers with Tank.
Till next week — see ya!
