Show Intro
Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott show right here on, you know where, the wonderful Planet Rock.
How you all doing?. Great to be with you once again. We have 60 little minutes to play some, in my humble opinion, wonderful music.
Starting off this week with this one. So welcome to the club, everyone. This is Ian Hunter.
Ian Hunter
Yes, for those of you in the know.
Welcome to the Club by Ian Hunter is a live album recorded at the Roxy, I think it was in Los Angeles in 1979. 1980s release in 1980; could have been recorded in 1979, but it was in promotion of the You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic album.
It's a double live album, but side four is brand new studio recordings.
This is not a new thing. This has been done by many artists. Kiss did it on Alive II. Def Leppard did it on Mirrorball. Answers on a postcard if there's more — I can't think of any right now.
But it was great to hear these new songs along with the set that he was playing promoting the album. And that's what we just heard — one of the new songs. The song is We've Got to Get Out of Here.
KISS
Now I just mentioned the fact that Kiss and Def Leppard did new music on what you might call side four of their double live albums. Let's hear a couple of tunes from said albums.
And before that, exactly the same thing with Kiss except it was the track five of five new songs on side four of their second live album Alive II, which came out in 1977. The song we heard a cover of was a Dave Clark Five classic that came out originally in 1965. The song is Any Way You Want It.
Def Leppard
Not all the way back to the '80s for a change there, folks; no that's only as far back as 2011.
It is the opening track of side four, if you like, of the Def Leppard double live album. It is Undefeated.
UFO
Right then, from 1977 let's go back to 1975. Studio stuff from the wonderful UFO.
Before that we heard the wonderful UFO from that brilliant album Force It with this — Kids (including Between the Walls / Quiet and the Loud).
The Sweet
Yeah, Chicken or the Egg — who came first — was it Sweet or was it Queen to do those insanely high harmonies?
Well, we heard Queen for the last couple of weeks showing off their incredible powers. Thought I would give Sweet a run out this week. Doesn't really matter who came first. They're both really, really good at what they do, and that is Sweet from the album Desolation Boulevard with The 16s, which was a hit for them back in, I believe, 1978.
You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock.
Coming up, we're going to go and visit Cosmo's Factory and have a poke round The Grapevine.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
And before that, all 11 minutes and seven seconds of it — Creedence Clearwater Revival from that wonderful album that is Cosmos Factory with their great version of the old Motown classic I Heard It Through the Grapevine.
Elton John
From the album of the same name, that is Elton John with one of his best-known early works — a song called Take Me to the Pilot/
The Damned
Right, here's a couple of really cool covers starting off with this crowd. They're Not Like Everybody Else — they are The Damned
And before that we heard a song also on Pin Ups but this time recorded by The Damned from their latest covers album Not Like Everybody Else, which has got some great tunes on it including a great version of the Ardenne Taylor Motown classic There's a Ghost in My House. I might play that in a couple of weeks' time.
But tonight I thought I'd go with the Syd Barrett–written Pink Floyd classic See Emily Play.
David Bowie
From the album that inspired Def Leppard to do a covers album in 2006.
That is David Bowie from 1973; the album is Pin Ups. The song that we heard was the Easybeats classic Friday on My Mind.
Show Outro
And that, my dear friends, that's about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. But hey, you know, I say it every week, but I mean it every week.
I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time. So please don't go anywhere. Don't touch that dial. Why would you want to anyway?
And until then I shall leave you with this to celebrate the fact that it was released yesterday — it being, get ready for the big drumroll, a 21 CD box set of the sensational Alex Harvey Band live. It is called Good Evening Boys and Girls, and I'm going to stick with the covers.
I've just played Bowie and The Damned. We're going to have the Sensational Alex Harvey Band with their version of the Alice Cooper classic School's Out.
Until next week. See ya.
