Joe was born in the Crookes area of Sheffield, England and grew up not far from Rick Savage.
He was taught how to sing and play guitar by his mother and wrote his first song aged just eight.
He would go on to join Atomic Mass who would become Def Leppard in November 1977.
An imaginary name he came up with in art class in 1975 when designing band posters.
Joe Elliott (2018)
"(Pete Willis) brought Sav and Tony Kenning to me Mum and Dad's house and we went up to my bedroom and they saw my record collection."
"And saw how enthusiastic I was and that's the night Def Leppard was born. Including the name."
Joe Elliott (2017)
"It was the most ordinary, extraordinary childhood you could ever expect you know. Really good parents.
Very disciplined but not overly strict. Totally got the fact that I loved music 'cause they did too."
Rick Savage (2014)
"To me he's still the same guy who was in that bedroom back in 1977.
No matter how big or popular or how famous he ever got, it doesn't change him.
It never changed him. It never will change him because his values have remained the same.
And I think that allied to the success that's he's rightly had as a singer makes him a cut above the rest."
Down 'n' Outz
In October 2009 Joe performed a one-off live show with members of The Quireboys in London as support to the reformed
Mott The Hoople. Their setlist featured rare songs by Mott The Hoople spin-off bands and led to the recording of a full
album called 'My ReGeneration' released in 2010.
Tours followed in 2010, 2011 and 2014 along with a second album of covers called 'The Further Adventures Of...' in the same year.
The third Down 'n' Outz album called 'This Is How We Roll' was released in October 2019.
Planet Rock Radio Show
Joe began a series of six two hour long special shows on Planet Rock radio in the UK in June 2010 called 'My ReGeneration' to promote
the debut album by the Down 'n' Outz. Following these shows it became 'The Joe Elliott Show' which has run for one hour every Saturday since
apart from one missed show in mid 2011 after the death of Joe Elliott senior.
The one hour show features Joe playing some of his favourite tracks from the 70s along with more current artists.
Over 450 shows have now taken place and the 500 mark will be passed in mid 2020.
SiriusXM Radio Show
In April 2018 Joe began presenting a one hour show called 'Joe Elliott's Songs From The Vault'
for SiriusXM's Deep Tracks channel in the USA.
The show features a similar format to his weekly Planet Rock show in the UK but is broadcast only on the third Thursday of each month.
Show description - "Sharing his passion for deep classic rock with stories and music from his personal collection.".
