The venue is located 1.8 miles to the South of the city centre within a sports complex of venues that also includes many exhibition halls and the nearby 83, 0000 capacity Signal Iduna Park stadium (formerly Westfalenstadion).
It was opened in 1925.
The venue was expanded in 1952.
