DEF LEPPPARD In SYRACUSE, NY On THE WORLD TOUR 2023 (Show Report/Setlist)

Def Leppard played another show on The World Tour 2023 last night in Syracuse, NY with 17 songs performed.

The show took place at the 49,057 capacity JMA Wireless Dome.

The first show in this city since June 2016.

The first appearance at this venue.

A roof overhead to protect them from any rain.

No wait, that's back in the UK where it has pretty much rained every day since they left Glasgow.

The World Tour Resumes

After a month long break the band returned to the stage and the USA.

After three small scale shows in January and February to kick off their 2023 touring it was back to a big stage.

This time a dome which holds almost 50,000 for sports events.

A crowd of up to 35,000 attended this show and packed out the venue for The World Tour's first official show in the USA.

Anniversaries

Rick Allen made his usual short Instagram video post before show time but did not mention the fact it was exactly 37 years to the day since he played his first show back with Def Leppard.

5th August 1986 in Cork, Ireland as the band started their six date Irish warm-up tour for the Monsters Of Rock festivals.

A day with two other anniversaries including one Joe did mention - signing their first recording contract on 5th August 1979.

Read Joe's comments below.

Drift Away Snippet

Joe added a brief section of the song 'Drift Away' before 'This Guitar' as covered in the 70s by Dobie Gray (who Joe has played on his Planet Rock Show).

Joe was accompanied by Rick doing his usual drum beat as Joe played before the band introductions.

Joe got the crowd to clap and sing along to the chorus.

A song Bon Jovi used to regularly cover during their 'Slippery When Wet' tour in 1986/1987.

Under The Dome

Formerly known as the Carrier Dome and a venue notably played by The Police and U2 on their Synchronicity and Joshua Tree tours in the 80s.

And well known by anyone who owns any "audience" recordings of those bands.

Played most recently by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (in April 2023 to 35,000 fans) and in 2022 by both Paul McCartney and Elton John.

By the time it reached 9:15pm Def Leppard were ready to take the stage as darkness fell and the sunlight was no longer shining through the transparent roof.

The venue reminiscent of the Roger Centre in Toronto with the lighting even more effective in the darkness in this giant venue.

The band exploded on stage with 'Take What You Want' and the pounding drums proving after 37 years Rick Allen still creates "Thunder" despite his accident.

The first five songs at least were broadcast live by fans and the footage proved it was yet another great performance in front of another great crowd on this tour.

The entire show has now been posted on YouTube - see Fan Videos link below.

Motley Crue Camera

A camera on a boom was spotted in some of the pre-show posts by Motley Crue which might indicate some filming going on or perhaps a new camera being used for the screens.

The last time one of these as spotted was in Sheffield when Joe announced they were filming that show for an upcoming video release.

Alice Cooper

Veteran rocker Alice Cooper joined the tour for the first time.

A reunion with Motley Crue having played with them on their "final" tour and last ever shows in 2015 (or so he thought).

His 15 song set included the Lep-related 'Under My Wheels' (covered by Joe and Phil) and 'Elected' which featured him dressing up in appropriate USA flag colours and top hat.

Alice and his band previously played with Def Leppard in Belfast and Dublin in June 2011 at the start of the Mirrorball world tour.

17 Song Setlist

The same 17 song setlist played once more.

All three 'Diamond Star Halos' songs played in Syracuse for the first time.

Syracuse History

The first visit here was 43 years ago with Judas Priest and the Scorpions at Landmark Theatre in August 1980.

They returned as headliners in August 1983 for a rescheduled show at War Memorial Arena on the Pyromania tour.

The next four shows in 1999, 2000, 2003 and 2008 were all played at the New York State Fair and like the first two visits all played in the month of August.

They would not make their return to the city until June 2016 on the Summer Tour 2016 at the new Lakeview Amphitheater venue.

Last night's show was the 8th overall performance in Syracuse.

With 5 of the 8 shows taking place in outdoor venues.

The next Def Leppard show takes place in Columbus, OH on 8th August at an historic venue (for many reasons).
