Def Leppard bassist Rick Savage celebrates his 56th birthday today and a photo gallery is available.

Sav was born in Sheffield, England on this day in 1960 to parents Kenneth and Sarah.

He is currently on a break at home in Sheffield after the 2016 tour ended in Cedar Rapids, IA on 10th October.

Sav formed the band alongside Pete Willis and Tony Kenning in late 1977 when they recruited Joe, who had lived just a couple of streets away in the Crookes area of Sheffield.

He mentioned plans to do some solo work outside of Def Leppard for the first time in September 2015 during an interview for the Classic Rock Fan Pack magazine.

Read his quotes below about the project that has yet to see the light of day.

Classic Rock Fanpack 2015 - Rick Savage Interview Quotes

No outside projects for you?

"I haven't been in the past. Not to come across as all mysterious but all I'll say is: watch this space. I'm getting to the point where, for me personally, it would be interesting to do something outside the band. I've got something in mind. I don't think you can really call it a side project. The rest of the band don't even know about it. In fact, nobody knows anything about it. It's something - there's been a few circles within windmills of my head."

"Mainly I look at the other guys and think: where the fuck have you found the time? Or the energy?. When I'm off the road or not in the studio I'm with my family, or trying to write a song. And the songs I do write are purely with Def Leppard in mind. Or I'm actually demoing them. No word of a lie, we took a year off in 2009 or 2010. It took me that whole year to write Kings Of The World that went on the Mirrorball album. It took me that long to get it how I wanted it to be."
