Show Intro

"Greetings my fellow music lovers and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Always great to be with you. Revving up now for some insane Def Leppard work as well as all this promo that I've been doing. We have the little matter of The Leadmill show on the 19th. Got Bramall Lane home of the newly promoted Blades on the 22nd. And Wednesday in the play-off's as well. It's a good time to be in Sheffield if you like football. But this next sixty minutes is all about music. And this is from the brand new album by Ian Hunter."

Ian Hunter

"I can't tell you how honoured I am to feature on that track along with the likes of the late great Taylor Hawkins and Waddy Watchel. What a guitarist, currently plays with Stevie Nicks. He was in Keith Richard's Expensive Winos. And a million other records. An absolutely phenomenal guitarist. But what a brilliant tune and what a great album. It's just superb to think this guy is 84 next birthday. And he's got the entire music industry pretty much playing on his album. The album is called Defiance Part 1.And the song that we just heard This Is What I'm Here For."

Generation X

"And what Ian Hunter was here for back in 1979 was to be a producer for these next two artists. Starting off with Generation X."

"And before that we heard Generation X featuring, before he was a huge solo star, Billy Idol. Again produced by Ian Hunter. The album is Valley Of The Dolls. The song we heard, a huge hit at the time, King Rocker."

Ellen Foley

"What a fantastic album that is. It is Night Out. the artist is Ellen Foley. 1979. Produced by Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson. The song a cover of a Graham Parker And The Rumour tune called Thunder And Rain."

Horslips

"So as we step out of the spotlight of one of my all time heroes. We step into the shadow of the grim reaper. More of our heroes taken this week. We're gonna celebrate the work of a couple of them right now. Starting off with Horslips."

"And before that we heard Horslips. Who also lost their guitarist this week. And a wonderful player he was, John Fean. Horslips were pretty much credited for inventing Celtic Rock which you and I would hear a couple of years later when Thin Lizzy did Black Rose. They were like a cross between Lizzy and Jethro Tull. I saw them live at the Sheffield Top Rank back in 1977 and a mighty fine live band they were. We just heard them there from the album Book Of Invasions. The song that we heard The Power And The Glory."

Bachman Turner Overdrive

"You may well have read this week the passing of Tim Bachman. Once of Bachman Turner Overdrive. Now those of us of a certain age. Come on hands up who didn't buy the 7 inch single of You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet?. Of course you did. But as it happens Tim Bachman didn't actually play on that song. He did however play on the song that we just heard. Taken from BTO's greatest hits. It is Let It Ride."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming up we're gonna go visit the madman across the water but with a bit of a twist."

Elton John

"And before that we heard Elton John. The title track of his 1970 album Madman Across The Water. But this is not the version that came came out originally which featured Chris Spedding. This is a version that was only released as a bonus track these days on re-releases of the album. And I think came out on a thing called Past Masters in the mid 90s. It is the title track and the guitar work is all by Mick Ronson."

Gordon Lightfoot

"I can easily accept that that gentleman's work is not what you and I would normally call rock. Obviously more folk rock. But if you saw the tributes that rolled in earlier this week from the likes of Geddy Lee from Ruah. Bryan Adams. Sebastian Bach, once of Skid Row. And many many more you'd know he much he was loved and adored by his fellow Canadian musicians. He is Gordon Lightfoot. Sadly passed away earlier this week. I have an affinity with Gordon Lightfoot because of my Mum. She learnt to play a guitar via a Bert Weedon Play In A Day book. And an Americana folk rock book which also featured some Gordon Lightfoot songs. And I would watch her fingers and wish I could play half as well as her. From his greatest hits album we just heard one of his better known works The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald."

Mick Ronson

"And talking of Mick Ronson. Earlier this week I was sent an article from a website where the journalist had said these are the five best solos that Mick Ronson ever played. With the greatest of respect I love anybody that will do an article on Mick Ronson. But he'd obviously never heard Moonage Daydream or Black Country Rock or Saviour Machine. or this beauty from his Play Don't Worry album."

"And before that Mick Ronson from the album Play Don't Worry. Now that guy never played a bad solo in his life. but if that doesn't come in his Top Five something's seriously wrong. The song is Angel No 9."

Fanny

"So did anybody see the Fanny movie The Right To Rock on TV last night?. If you did you aw yours truly doing his little bit to promote that all female band that were Fanny. One of the first all female bands to ever get a record deal and make albums. I discovered them in 1972 when there was a free Flexi-Disc in the NME and the song was Blind Alley. From an album called Fanny Hill I think. And I played it no my show many times. So I thought I would play something different tonight. So there it is from a box set called For The First Time In A Long Time. That is Fanny with the single version of the song Charity Ball."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time. For what I like to think is a landmark show. And we shall celebrate accordingly.

"Until then I shall leave you with this. Having just heard one of the first all female bands to make a bit of a splash. Here's another one that made an even bigger splash. Specifically in the UK and Japan. From their debut album this is their debut single. It's The Runaways and Cherry Bomb. Until next week see ya!."
