The Joe Elliott Show - 22nd November 2025 Transcript - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Show Intro

Evening all, and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. But elsewhere also — great to be with you again.

It is freezing cold. I’m home, I’m in Dublin, Ireland. It is absolutely taters over here, as I know it is in the UK. So we need to warm up for the next 60 minutes. No better way than starting the show than with the Foo Fighters.

Foo Fighters

From the days when the Foo Fighters were one solitary person. That solitary person, of course, being the wonderful Dave Grohl. From the album of the same name, it is the Foo Fighters with “I’ll Stick Around.”

Cockney Rebel

Now, occasionally a rock band steps out of the norm and does something a little unusual, or has an unusual lineup — like, for example, a violin. Here are a couple of bands that feature a violin quite heavily, starting off with Cockney Rebel.

And before that, we heard Cockney Rebel, who once featured members of Be-Bop Deluxe, from their Psychomodo album. We heard the title track, in fact.

Doctors Of Madness

Yeah, the mid-70s threw up some very eclectic music. Think the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Think Split Enz.

And those couple of bands that we just heard there — that is the Doctors of Madness, from their second album Figments of Emancipation, with a song called “In Camera (Hoist + Close) (Reopen) (For Simon, Charlie, Andy and Bill Nelson)”. For those not in the know, that is Be-Bop Deluxe.

The Move

Right then — with Message from the Country, this is The Move.

And before that, we heard a band that were a huge influence on Cheap Trick — The Move, from an album called Message from the Country, with that fantastic hit single of theirs, “Tonight.”

Cheap Trick

I’ve been playing the album to death for the last seven to ten days. It’s absolutely fantastic. It is brand-new Cheap Trick. The album is called All Washed Up. The song that we just heard is called “The Best Thing,” which is probably the best thing on the album actually — it’s really good. But trust me, it’s not a one-song album. It’s a really great record.

You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock.

Coming up, we’re gonna get all down and dirty in the streets of New York.”

Lou Reed

And before that we heard Lou Reed, from that brilliant live album Rock ’n’ Roll Animal. The intro to that song is so, so brilliant, with the two guitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter, who would go on to be the basis of Alice Cooper’s band for many years after this album came out. It was recorded live in New York City at Howard Stein’s Academy of Music, and what we heard was “Intro / Sweet Jane.”

Genesis

From the recently released box set celebrating the 50th anniversary of the album — that is Genesis, with a live version of the title track “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.”

Whitesnake

Okay, so hands up if — like me, just a few days ago — you had a little bit of a tear in your eye when you saw Lord Coverdale make his retirement announcement.

Now, myself and David go back a long, long way — 1981, to be precise. Def Leppard and Whitesnake toured together many, many times. But I’ve known him since we were recording High ’n’ Dry and he was recording the album Saints & Sinners. He would allow me to pop into his studio and watch him sing, and nurse me off the ledge when I was really struggling to do stuff with Mutt Lange. He was such a great guy, and very generous with his brandy, let’s put it that way.

But I was very sad to see the announcement, although it’s kind of expected really. He’s done it — he’s been there and he’s done that — and he deserves to spend some time with his family and just not worry about it anymore.

So I’d like to celebrate my memories of David with this one song, which is where I came in, and it’s quite honestly one of the most emotional things that he ever did. So on behalf of the world — David, if you’re listening — happy retirement. This is Whitesnake.

And before that, Lord Coverdale with his wonderful act Whitesnake — God bless you, David. The album is Trouble, I think it’s 1978, and the song is a most wonderful version of “Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City.”

The Pretty Reckless

Pretty cool last week to see pictures of Taylor Momsen standing next to Jim Carrey for the first time since they shot The Grinch movie 25 years ago. I think it was when they were both at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, involved in the induction of Soundgarden. But that’s Taylor with a band now, no longer an actress — or an actor as they like to be called these days. She’s the front person of the wonderful band The Pretty Reckless, and from the album Going to Hell, we just heard “Heaven Knows.”

Show Outro

And on that note, I shall say “fare thee well” — not just from David, but from me, for this particular show. It’s been a pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time, so please don’t go anywhere.

Until then, let’s go out with a bit of noise from the album Feel the Noize: The Greatest Hits. This is Slade and “Take Me Back Home.”

Till next week — see ya.
