The Joe Elliott Show #320 - Transcript

Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. This week coming to you all the way from Tacoma in Washington. Which is about 30 miles from Seattle. Now Tacoma holds a very, very distinct place in the heart of Def Leppard because it's the venue where Steve Clark played his last ever gig for Def Leppard in 1988. More on that later on. But let's start off with the three words that most of us rock bands never want to hear. This is Sweet."

The Sweet

"Originally from their 1974 album Desolation Boulevard that is Sweet. These days you can find it on Action the Ultimate Story which is a Greatest Hits with a bunch of new songs. That is Sweet with Turn It Down."

Queen

"And had the words Turn It Down been written into Queens contract. We'd all like to think this is what they would have done."

"And before that from the album the Works we heard Queen with Tear It Up."

Lone Star

"I have what you might call a historically fantastic, yet quality wise awful recording of that band live off TV in 1976. If anybody's got a better quality copy than the one that I got off YouTube please let me have it. The band is Lone Star and there from the album Firing On All Six we heard All Of Us To All Of You."

E.L.O.

"Birmingham is one of those cities that many, many years spawned so many fantastic bands you'd think it was the capital of rock. Here's a couple of 'em. One of 'em full on metal. The other one a little bit more melodic. Starting off with E.L.O.."

"And before that from an album Mr. Blue Sky which is re-records that Jeff Lynn did about four years ago. We heard the E.L.O. song 10538 Overture. Of course once covered Def Leppard. Ten years ago now, wow!."

Black Sabbath

"From what I consider to be my favourite album of theirs. Volume Four. That is Black Sabbath with the fantastic Supernaut."

Humble Pie

"Listening to the vocals of that particular song. Not necessarily the stuff sung by Peter Frampton and Steve Marriott but the stuff sung by the late Greg Ridley. You can hear pretty much where Gene Simmons got his whole vocal style from and he, Uncle Gene, would be the first to tell you that that band were an enormous influence of a very fledgling KISS. That band are Humble Pie. The song we just heard I'm ready."

"Well from a very emotional memory from 1988 to a very uplifting one from the early 70s compilation records. Island Records. They out a bunch of them. There were some beauties. There was You Can All Join In, Nice Enough To Eat, Bumpers and my favourite L.P. I discovered some wonderful bands. They would put 15 to 20 tracks by 15 to 20 different artists on these compilation records. And if you really connected with a song, you could go back and discover more. And I discovered bands like Spooky Tooth and Free and King Crimson and Mott The Hoople. I'm gonna play a couple of tracks from the album L.P. Starting off with this beauty by Traffic."

Traffic

"And before that Traffic featuring the wonderfully talented Jim Capaldi and the multi instrumentalist and amazing singer that is Steve Winwood. The album that that song was lifted from John Barleycorn Must Die. The song we heard Empty Pages."

Jethro Tull

"Couple of songs there featured on the Island compilation album L.P. We just heard Jethro Tull with Mother Goose which was lifted from their album Aqualung."

The New York Dolls

"OK so from the Hippie Trippie early 70s UK scene. Let's go to the slightly more punky New York scene with The New York Dolls."

"And before that from their second album in 1974. The album Too Much Too Soon. We heard The New York Dolls with Chatterbox."

David Bowie

"From his 1973 covers album Pin Ups that is David Bowie with a song originally written and recorded by a band called The Mojos. The song Everything's Alright."

Show Outro

"And that my friends all the way from Tacoma in Washington is about it for this week. It's been a pleasure as always. I shall be back with you god willing next week at the dame time from Toledo, Ohio. Which will be the second but last show that Def Leppard plays this year."

"So I'm gonna leave you with this which seems very appropriate seeing that the temperature seems to be up somewhat for what they normally are this time of year. This is perfect. From the album The Taking. This is Duff McKagan's Loaded and Indian Summer. Until next week see ya!."
