The Joe Elliott Show - Quotes
Show Intro
"Well that's it then for another Christmas and New Year. All the decorations back into their boxes and up into the loft. As for the tree. My better half suggested a real one. I must admit it was rubbish. Unlike the music for the next sixty minutes however, which is great. Starting off with a bit of this."Ian Hunter
"We Ian Hunter fans may take that song for granted when he plays it live because he's been playing it live at every gig since 1975. But when you actually listen to the studio version. Specifically the guitar solo by the mighty Mick Ronson, it really is a fantastic bit of work. From Ian's debut solo album in 1975 that is Once Bitten Twice Shy."
The Stranglers
"Now a couple of weeks ago I tried to play a brand new version of an old Stranglers song which has been re-recorded by The Stranglers and the band that they were supporting in December. Simple Minds. Inadvertently we put the wrong version in. So here it is in it's glory. The new version of Get A Grip On Yourself by The Stranglers And Simple Minds."
The Clash
"Keeping it New Wave there for a couple of songs. That's The Clash from their debut album back in 1977 with a track called Clash City Rockers. And before that we heard The Stranglers with their guest friends Simple Mind who they were opening for in early December last year with a brand new recording of the song Get A Grip On Yourself."
Ricky Warwick/Joe Walsh
"Now here's a happy little number by Ricky Warwick."
"He is such a wonderful guitar player. His name is Joe Walsh and from his Best Of collection that is the classic Turn To Stone. And before that from an album called Hearts On Trees which is coming out next month I believe having been already available as a Pledge Music album. We heard Ricky Warwick with a fantastic little number called Psycho."
"You're listening to The Joe Elliott show on Planet Rock. It's time for a little break and when we come back we're gonna take you to church for a reading from the book of Genesis. Get ready to do some counting beyond ten! See ya in a bit."
Steve Hillage/Genesis
"What a great album that is. It's essentially Utopia with Steve Hillage playing guitar and the guitarist from Utopia, who happens to be Todd Rundgren, producing the album. The album from 1976 is called L. The artist as I just mentioned Steve Hillage and the song we just heard there Hurdy Gurdey Man. A cover of an old Donovan song actually."
"And before that from the album Wind And Wuthering we heard Genesis with the wonderful Eleventh Earl Of Mar."
Guida/Slade
"Right they're back. And they've been listening to Sweet. All the way from Italy, this is the Glam-tastic Guida."
"I played those two back to back because they both kind of like the booty boy image. Slade obviously had it back in 1966. As far back as the Sixties when they were called The 'N Betweens and then Ambrose Slade and then on to Slade but the Doc Martins and the Bover boy trousers never really went away. And the band that have taken on that mantle and run with it all the way from Italy as I mentioned beforehand. A band called Guida. It's actually spelt G U I D A so don't be afraid if you see it in the shops as 'gweeda' because that's what I thought it called. But they're called Guida. The album's called Let's Do It Again and the song that we just heard was called Teenage Rebel."
Sweet/David Bowie
"Oh go on then. Just this once. Let's play the original for once."
"A great song but it never actually made the album. It was used later on as a B Side. But it's a great song and actually inspired the name of a band that are actually currently touring David Bowie material all over the world right now. The band are Holy Holy featuring Woody Woodmansey the drummer on that particular song. And the some time producer of David Bowie, although not that specific song there, Tony Visconti. But from the Ziggy Stardust sessions that is David Bowie And The Spiders From Mars with Holy Holy."
"And before that from their Best Of collection we heard one of the best glam bands there ever was. Sweet with Fox On The Run."
Show Outro
"And that my friends is about it for this week, been a pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at the same time."
"Until then gonna leave you with some modern day glam. This band I have high hopes for. They are one of my favourite current bands. They're young. They're really good. They've got one album out. They're re-working it I believe. But I'm really looking forward to hearing some new music from them soon and I really need to see this band live. They are The Struts and from the album Everybody Wants this is My Machine. Until next week see ya!."
