Def Leppard @ The Omni/Omni Coliseum By Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Def Leppard has achieved its mammoth success without a strong individual personality or songs that really address anything other than love, the lack of love or the possibility of love - 'skin on skin, let the love begin' is typical of the lyrics its sets to mostly melodic music.
The quintet's only real social-concern tune is 'Gods Of War', which the band performed about a third of the way through its performance.
Def Leppard deals primarily in good-time, exuberant music, and that, along with the band's frayed but wholesome look, has facilitated its passage from post-punk, heavy metal status to that of a crossover band with an appeal to virtually all segments of the under-30 pop music market.
Leppard, currently touring with a No. 1 album, 'Hysteria', and a No. 1 single, 'Love Bites' did manage to make itself heard above the continual shouting, foot-stomping and chair-beating din of the crowd.
But it is not likely that anyone unfamiliar with its songs could have passed a test on the lyrics afterward.
What counted was the sound and the lights, and there was plenty of both from the band, which travels with 63,000 pounds of equipment.
Def Leppard employs an elaborate lighting system with lasers that drew patterns and pictures on the Omni ceiling and on screens.
