Show Intro

"Well, if you haven't recovered from Christmas yet, I can only hope it's because you haven't actually stopped and you're keeping the party going all the way to New Year. Welcome everyone once again to, you guessed it, it's the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock and this week it is my best of 2023. Now as I mentioned last week, I couldn't possibly play all the great music that came out this year. There's just far too much."

"This is just a taste of what really floated my boat. Let's get started shall we? This is one of my favourite albums of the year. This is The Struts."

The Struts

"Yes, it really is an amazing album from their latest offering Pretty Vicious, that is The Struts with Rockstar."

Sparks

"Now this next band I first discovered in 1974 and I've been a fan ever since and this is from their latest album, yes, they're still making great music. This is Sparks."

"And before that we heard Sparks from their latest album The Girl Is Crying In A Latte and what a fantastic performance they put on at Glastonbury, the song we heard Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is."

Black Star Riders

"Yes, that is indeed yours truly on backing vocals. In fact, I was going to play it back to back with Spillways from Ghost, which did technically come out January '23 but the song was a little older so I thought too self-indulgent would stick to the one. It's the Black Star Riders from their latest album Wrong Side Of Paradise with a song called Better Than Saturday Night."

Def Leppard

"Well, you just heard me on backing vocals. Here I shine a little brighter from The Drastic Symphonies album. This is Def Leppard."

"And before that we heard Def Leppard from the album Drastic Symphonies reworked slang song from 1996 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The tune is Turn To Dust."

Hozier

"Definitely in my top three albums of the year, that is Hozier from an album called Unreal Unearthed. I just saw him at the 3Arena in Dublin just before Christmas and it was absolutely spectacular the song that we just heard, Francesca."

"You're listening to the Joe Elliott Show, best of 2023 right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming up, the sweet sounds of the Rolling Stones."

The Rolling Stones

"And before that, absolutely brand new music from the Rolling Stones, Jagger's 80, Keith just had his 80th birthday and they're still making stunning music as we just heard from the latest album Hackney Diamonds featuring Lady Gaga and what a performance she puts in. We heard the song Sweet Sounds Of Heaven."

The Beatles

"I don't think many of us would have thought in 2023 that our favourite octogenarians were still making new music, but they are. Well sort of on that particular song. It's a late 70s John Lennon demo that was worked on in the mid 90s by the surviving three Beatles and finished in 2021, I think it was, 22, by the remaining two Beatles, Ringo and Sir Paul McCartney. Features on the re-released and remixed 67 to 70 best of, it is The Beatles with Now And Then."

Ian Hunter

"So we've got Jagger and Richards in their 80s, we've got Macca and Ringo in their 80s and this next gentleman also in his 80s released a new album this year and he will also be releasing a new one in 2024. This is Ian Hunter."

"And before that, Ian Hunter from an album called Defiance Part One and as I've said many times, there's the clue. Yes, Defiance Part Two is coming in 2024 but for now, we'll just stick with a track which features Robert Trujillo and Slash from the album that came out this particular year. It is Ian Hunter with the song, the title track in fact, of the album Defiance."

Foo Fighters

"Yes, it's great to have them back once again with Josh Freese on drums after the sad passing of the late, great Taylor Hawkins, of course, it is the Foo Fighters from their latest album But Here We Are, the song we just heard Rescued."

Show Outro

"And that, my friends, is about it for this best of 2023 edition of The Joe Elliott Show. Apologies to all the listeners if you didn't hear something that you really dug that didn't quite connect or I never even got to hear but there was so much great music out this year, couldn't possibly play it all."

"But I do have one choice left so here we go and I would just like to add that poor old Nick Workman will not be getting offered a knighthood after this particular tune. From their latest album Battle Lines, this is Vega and God Save The King. Until next week, until next year, Happy New Year and see ya!."
