Show Intro

"Evening all! Great to be with you once again. Always a pleasure."

"Now, tonight is a very special show because we have two very significant anniversaries to celebrate."

"The second one I shall get to in about four minutes time."

"But for right now, let's celebrate the fact that yesterday it was the 40th anniversary release of Pyromania, albeit 41 years after it came out that that's the Covid delay for you."

"So this gives me a very unique opportunity to do the intro to my show very differently and pretty much as a one-off."

"So here we go. I'm Joe Elliott."

Def Leppard

"That, my friends, is a very significant song on the Pyromania album because it was essentially Phil's audition."

"We'd known him for years. We knew he was the right guy, but still we wanted him to feel comfortable with Mutt Lange."

"So we left them alone listening to the tracks and Mutt sent Phil home with a cassette of the backing track for that particular song. And the next day he came in."

"They went in the studio. We left them alone. We let them just work it out together."

"And Mutt came running out the room after about 15 minutes. And he said, you got to come hear this."

"And that's what you hear. The solo in Stagefright. And that is the rough mix version."

"There's a whole rake of, in fact, the entire album."

"There's rough mixes as part of the Pyromania box set, which also includes lost demos, live performances from LA Forum and from Germany when we did a gig with Maiden and Schenker and Priest."

"It was just a crazy mad rock fest."

"It's pretty much everything warts and all, including the legendary 11th missing song, which we didn't even know existed."

"We knew we'd written it, but we didn't realize how far we'd taken it, which was as far as the music."

"We never wrote any lyrics or melodies, but that's to be found. And I might even play a bit of that later on next week, maybe."

"But for now, that is indeed the rough mix version of the song, Stagefright."

David Bowie

"So the rest of the show is going to be taken up, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Mick Ronson Memorial gig at Hammond Smith Odeon on the 29th of April 1994."

"I'm going to be playing lots of Mick Ronson stuff, music he's featured on by Bowie, Ian Hunter, his own solo stuff, and of course, the odd song."

"Literally, the odd song from the actual gig itself."

"So let's get started with this one. Again, significant because it was literally the first song that Def Leppard ever played. This is David Bowie."

"That was preceded by a song from the very same album and the very first song Def Leppard ever played in a rehearsal room."

"It is, of course, Suffragette City."

The Spiders From Mars

"From the very night itself, that is The Spiders, where myself and Phil Collin and Bill Nelson from Beb Bop Deluxe, Billy Rankin once of Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and Nazareth, all on guitars, Phil Lanson on keyboards, and of course, Woody Woodmansey on drums, and Trevor Bolder on bass from the original Spiders From Mars."

"So we just abbreviated it to The Spiders."

"We were so honoured to be invited to do this particular set where we played a bunch of Mick Ronson-based Bowie songs, mostly in a couple of Mick songs as well."

"That is, of course, Moonage Daydream."

"The gig was organized by Maggie Ronson, visited by Susie Ronson, Mick's widow, both in tears at Phil's amazing solo on that particular song, originally featured on the album The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, but that is our version from the night of Moonage Daydream."

Mick Ronson

"Now, when Mick Ronson went solo in 1974, he became absolute black belt interpreting other people's music."

"Here's one of the greatest."

"And before that, we heard from the same album, Play Don't Worry."

"Mick Ronson with his fantastic interpretation of the old Pure Prairie League tune, Angel No. 9."

Joe Elliott

"That, my friends, is yours truly on acoustic guitars and vocals with the much-missed Dick Decent on piano."

"What a great performance he put in on a song that is our interpretation of a Mick Ronson interpretation of a song written by a gentleman called Laurie Heath, who was once a member of the New Seekers."

"It featured on the original version, featured on the album Play Don't Worry."

"It is This Is For You, which I recorded for the Beside Bowie documentary."

"Just wanted to give something back."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock."

"While I have your attention, I'd just like to say this. Cash For Kids is the official charity of Planet Rock."

And to mark Cash for Kids Day on the 2nd of May, we've got three limited edition t-shirts for sale with all the profits going to Cash For Kids, who are desperately looking to make sure that no child goes hungry over the holidays, as for some kids, school meals are the only hot meal that they'll get."

"The T-shirts have been designed by Lizzy Hale of Halestorm, my great friend Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy, and Toby Wright of Terrorvision, and will only be available to pre-order until Cash For Kids Day."

"So make sure you get your ordering before it's too late."

"You can find out more about Cash For Kids and pre-order your t-shirt by heading to planetrock.com forward slash cfkday and thanks for your support."

"Right, coming up, one of Mick Ronson's greatest ever solos."

Ian Hunter

"And before that, Ian Hunter from his debut album in 1975, one of the greatest solos ever played by anybody."

"The song is The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing Tut The Truth."

David Bowie

"Wow, wow, that's just fantastic stuff. It is from the 1973 album Aladdin Sane."

"It's David Bowie and the Spiders From Mars, which of course featured Mick Ronson on lead electric guitar, the song Panic In Detroit."

Show Outro

"And that, my friends, is about it for this particular show, which has seen us celebrate 40 years of Pyromania and 30 years since the Mick Ronson memorial show at the Hammersmith Odeon."

"So I can only really think of one way to go out on this show and it is with this absolutely masterful epic."

"Originally recorded on his 1974 solo album, this is Mick Ronson's awesome 1990 interpretation of the song Slaughter On 10th Avenue."

"Until next week, see ya!."
