Lamont And Tonelli - Phil Collen Interview Quotes

His First Guitar/His Parents/Leaving School

"You stopped practicising didn't you?. I hear it in your voice. Well I didn't quit school I kind of finished it out poorly right at the end there because I got a little distracted. I remember the careers officer said to me well, maybe you could think about maybe working in a guitar factory or a store. And my Mum was so supportive and she you know screw them, she was very supportive and that really did help I gotta say. So I did and I worked in a factory for a year then I was a dispatch rider on a motorcycle for three years and then my band got a record deal. And it was just kind of peserverance and ambition and drive and everything and I was able to give up my day job and actually keep playing guitar. So I was getting like 50 bucks a week but that's all I needed at the time. So it was awesome."

Iron Maiden Story/Joining Def Leppard

"Yeah I grew up with those guys. You know Paul Di'Anno the old singer from that band, I've known him since I was six years old. And they're really cool guys and they're from the same part of London as I'm from. And we would just bump into each other and yeah I almost did that but Adrian Smith ended up being the guitar player. And obviously it worked out great for me because I ended up in Def Leppard. My friends from Northern England and that was great because we're still on this quest to make the perfect song, create the perfect album. And we're still doing that, the perfect show and that was great. You know I kind of had more in common obviously. So it all worked out well."

Def Leppard Streaming/Digital Deal

"About a month ago. We'd been trying to get this sorted out for many years. The reason we didn't is because when everyone went digital we had a clause in our contract that we didn't have to if we didn't want to. And we felt that it was under valued. You know everyone weren't offering us anything and we felt the fact that if one of us died, one of us lost an arm. We spent millions and millions of dollars on one album let alone everything else. We felt that it had more value and was worht more than just that. You know it had very personal, you know, reasons why we didnt just go with that. So we finally figured out a great working relationship and something we felt was fair and so now we've released that on Universal and they've been awesome. Our record company, and it's a new day and we're really excited about that."

Starting The New Album

"So we're all working together with that and promoting our catalogue as opposed to just doing a new album. Which we have already started by the way. We're working on a new album, but the rest of the year is gonna be promoting the catalogue."
