19th April 1997 Buenos Aires - Rick Savage Interview Quotes

Show Intro

"Hi this is Rick Savage from Def Leppard and you're watching Much Music."

South American Tour/Mexico

"Yeah, we've been to Mexico before but this is the first time we've been any further south."

How's it going so far?

"Fantastic. Actually because every - it's a new country for everybody. We were never sure how we would be received, but in honesty the audiences have been some of the best we've ever played to. It's been unbelievable."

Crowd Reaction?

"Fantastic. It's nice to play a song where the audience know all the words to all the songs. It makes our life a little easier. ."

Panama Show

"It was a military base in Panama yes, yeah. It was great. We didn't expect so many people to show up to be honest, but there was over 16,000 there I believe. So, and with it being Panama it was slightly more Americanised and so it was almost like an American part right in the middle of Central America. Which it was great."

Slang Album/Different Sound

"I think it's fair to say Slang will never sell as many as our previous records. We kinda expected that when we were making it. But it got to a stage where we had to make this record, we had to make the Slang record purely for our own benefit. We wanted to record it differently and we knew by doing it differently it would sound different. And so we felt we may alienate a lot of people. But we just didn't wanna make another record like that. We wanted to get back to proving that we can make a record as a band as opposed to five individuals. And so we were extremely happy with the way it turned out. And we weren't sure whether it would be such a success. But there's sometimes in your career you have to do certain things that aren't necessarily geared towards selling units and making money. There's an artistic thing that comes into it, and we got a lot off our chest by making that album."
