Allentown, PA - Media Reviews

Def Leppard @ Allentown Fair By The Morning Call

Bolstered by premature Independence Day pyrotechnics, the youthful band Def Leppard last night proved to a sold-out Allentown Fairgrounds why its refined but restrained blend of rock and heavy metal currently has made it America's best received British group.

Packing more than a dozen songs into a 90-minute set, the fie-man band leaned heavily on selections from its third (and breakthrough) Mercury album, 'Pyromania', which has sold about three million copies.

Lead singer Joe Elliott played the perfect front man, constantly whipping the crowd into a frenzy.

When he's not wielding the microphone stand like an unwilling dance partner, Elliott's powerful voice fits the wicked mould of metal-mania.

As in the decadent rocker 'High 'N' Dry (Saturday Night)'.

The guitar army of bassist Rick Savage and guitarists Steve 'Steamin' Clark and Phil Collen lined the stage in an aggressive posture.

Their axes sling low, sharing the spotlight with their soaring riffs and fresh-sounding solos.

While drummer Rick Allen rolled along.

By The Morning Call 1983.
