[ 4: The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset ]

Waterloo Sunset.
[UK 7inch 1967.]

[LYRICS] :: (Ray Davies) 3:15 (original length)

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night
People so busy, makes me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright
But I don't need no friends
As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine

Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station
Every Friday night
But I am so lazy, don't want to wander
I stay at home at night
But I don't feel afraid
As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset
I am in paradise

Every day I look at the world from my window
But chilly, chilly is the evening time
Waterloo sunset's fine

Millions of people swarming like flies 'round Waterloo underground
But Terry and Julie cross over the river
Where they feel safe and sound
And the don't need no friends
As long as they gaze on Waterloo sunset
They are in paradise

Waterloo sunset's fine.

The song was about two lovers meeting outside Waterloo Station in London". Taken from the 1967 album "Something Else".

The Kinks were formed in London in 1963 by Ray Davies (main songwriter/lead vocals/rhythm guitar), his brother Dave Davies (lead guitar/vocals/songwriting), Pete Quaife (bass guitar/vocals), Mick Avory (drums).
They had their first big hit (their best known song) with their 3rd single "You Really Got Me" which reached Number One. Later covered by Van Halen. They had many UK hits in the 60s such as 'All Day and All of the Night' and 'Tired of Waiting for You' and then 'Waterloo Sunset' in 1967 by which time John Dalton had become their bass player.

Joe Elliott played this song on UK Radio 1 when he hosted the morning show in July 1992, mentioning it as one of his childhood favourites. Ray Davies has recently guested at 2 Bon Jovi gigs in London. The second one I went to in Hyde Park (Dry County Fan Site Link) in 2003 when they played The Kinks song "Lola" together. Joe played this song acoustically on his own at a US show on the 'Hysteria' tour in 1987/88 when Rick's drums briefly broke down.
Ray played live for the first time since being shot in the leg in New Orleans in January 2004. He played Waterloo Sunset during the show: [ London Sep 28th Review ]
