Single Notes By dltourhistory

The first single from 'Retro-Active' was released in September 1993. 'Two Steps Behind' was an acoustic ballad that was originally released as a B-Side to 'Make Love Like A Man' in the UK in June 1992. It was included as part of the 'Last Action Hero' movie soundtrack in July 1993 with new strings added on. The song became a big hit and reached number 32 in the UK and number 12 in the US. It also gave the band their second number one single, reaching the top spot in South Africa, Spain and Portugal.

Two UK CDs were released, both with the same tracklisting but one was a Limited Edition in a black metal tin case. It featured the same CD as the regular version and a circular card with the front cover on one side and tracklisting on the other all housed within the tin which contained protective foam. The outer lid had "DEF LEPPARD Two Steps Behind" embossed on it.

The US promo CD featured both the single version and the electric version to promote the 'Retro-Active' release. It lists the single as "Acoustic Version" but it is the strings version - not to be confused with the original 1992 UK version (now included on the Adrenalize Deluxe Edition). A rare Spanish promo CD featured an edit version and a live acoustic version from Spanish radio in January 1993.

Tonight/Two Steps Behind Sleeve Message

"This is a warts and all acoustic version of 'Tonight' that differs from the 'Adrenalize' and previous B-Side versions. It was recorded at 1:30am on February 10, 1993, at the legendary Sun Studios, three hours after our show at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, TN. It was mixed at Steve Vai's pad somewhere in the Hollywood Hills on June 25, the day after we got back to the United States from Japan."
