[Pandora] - "Ahh that's brilliant."
[Phil] - "Arr thankyou."
[Pandora] - "'Four Letter Word' and what's the four letter word?."
[Phil] - "The four letter word is open to suggestion. So it can be anything you want."
[Pandora] - "K.I.S.S."
[Phil] - "It's a just your kiss K.I.S.S that I miss uh (singing)."
[Pandora] - "Yeah."
[Phil] - "It's not. It's LOVE. Love is actually the four letter word."
[Pandora] - "And I thought it was always K.I.S.S ."
[Phil] - "Well that four letter word..."
[Pandora] - "That's four letters."
[Phil] - "See the thing is - alright. Here's a little lesson in songwriting this is what happened here - we, the song was called Four Letter Word and somebody said it was you know it should be the F-word. And it's like no well that's a bit too obvious. It's about love - so I tried to like get all these little four letter words in the first verse. Which kiss was one of them it's just your kiss that I miss - miss, wish - there was all these four letter words and at a certain point it was like, I can't keep this up I'm gonna have to have a five letter word! - but you get the idea of it."
[Pandora] - "Blonde again sorry. You're gonna now do another song called five letter word."
[Phil] - "Yeah why not 4 continents in a day!.... So yeah that's interesting so actually it is love. But I shouldn't be telling you this because it's supposed to be.."
[Pandora] - "It's open, it's what everybody - and I thought it was kiss. And now you're going to sing for us!"
[Phil] - "Apparently so."
[Pandora] - "You're going to sing for your supper."
[Phil] - "I've been singing all day, I sing all the time. This next song, we haven't got the real version of it so there's a reggae - dub instrumental version of this song which is called 'Runnin' Me Up' and if you keep the mic live I'll try and sing little bits..is there a bit where I could sing over it d'you think?."
[Simon] - "I think so yeah."
[Pandora] - "Well I'll tell you what why don't you take my headphones. With all the feedback there."
[Phil] - "Wow fantastic - woo."
[Pandora] - "Right - and then I'm going to press the button and you can start, you can introduce it - see you're co-hosting the show actually!."
[Phil] - "OK Brilliant. On Radio Caroline this is Man-Raze and this is 'Runnin' Me Up' dub instrumental version."
[Pandora] - "With Phil Collen on vocals."
[Phil] - "...with Phil Collen on vocals." (laughter)
[Pandora] - "And with Simon doing the da da da da in the background."
[Simon] - "I'm throwing in a bit of da da da da."
[Phil] - "We'd like you to do that too. Ohh it's a bit loud with the headphones on. Yeah you can lose them actually. Oh you can crank it up a bit can't you?" (song starts and Phil sings - very Police sounding song/really great bass and guitar work!.)
[Phil] - (after singing a bit) "Cool OK so you get the idea right."
[Pandora] - "Now is that nice or what?. That is really - you guys have got quite a repertoire haven't you."
[Simon] - "Thankyou."
[Phil] - "Thankyou yeah."
[Pandora] - "I'm Pandora and in my Rock Box this afternoon is Phil Collen from Def Leppard and Simon Laffy from the band Girl well they were both in Girl
he was in Def Leppard and the two of them now sitting so sagely, nodding yes. They are in a fantastic band called Man-Raze."
[Phil] - "Thankyou."
[Simon] - "Thankyou."
[Pandora] - "And that is 'Runnin' Me Up' and you sang a little bit at the beginning that was lovely looking forward to the real thing."
[Phil] - "Yeah, yeah absolutely and again you know I and again this band Man-Raze our influences are all coming out, someone actually asked me
the other day - "Well is it very different to Def leppard influences?" and it's not really it's still like Bowie and Iggy Pop a lot of that stuff
is in there as well, T. Rex but all the other stuff as well like The Police we're - me and Simon were huge Police fans. And Paul actually one of the things I knew he could play like
Dub and reggae and stuff. So he had that influence in there as soon as we started playing live it was like - it literally clicked straight away. It was great
I remember the first rehearsal last summer."
[Simon] - "Yeah. Umm we grew up on Trojan Records and things like that you know anyone in London with a whole kind of Carribean influence would've heard that music in
their youth and we wanted to incoporate it in the stuff that we do now. We love Dub music anyway and you know The Police have got a lot of reggae in there obviously and
plus rock and we also like the heavy stuff like Nirvana's all coming in there and Linkin Park and all that stuff."
[Phil] - "Exactly - the great thing about it is it's very expessive and it's great cause we can actually do whatever we like. With most bands they get - it's a very small narrow window
but with this band it's, we can let out all our influences and whatever we do and it's really exciting actually."
[Simon] - "Big footprints."
[Phil] - "Yeah - giant steps!." (referring to the next song...)
[Pandora] - "So are you still gonna get on the plane for the 11th of October?."
[Phil] - "No really!..."
[Pandora] - "I think Man-Raze opening for Def Leppard would be fantastic!."
[Phil] - "It'd be cool."
[Pandora] - "Did we talk about that off air or on-air? I can't remember."
[Phil] - "Well we're on air now so. No, no that's cool I'd love to, actually it'd be great. Hurt my throat, but there ya go who cares!"
[Simon] - "Break a few strings."
[Phil] - "That's the other thing like you know all year I've been playing with Def Leppard. I haven't broke one string.
The other day in rehearsal I broke 3 in a day! One the day before it's like - well it's cause I'm playing a lot harder cause it's a different type of music slightly."
[Simon] - "It's a massive enthusiasm - we just love what we're doing and I hope that that's coming across in what you're hearing as well."
[Pandora] - "Oh definitely, definitely. And you chose this song from way back then which is?."
[Phil] - "'Walking On The Moon' by The Police. On Radio Carloline." (song plays followed by Nirvana 'In Bloom')
[Pandora] - "That was a song by Nirvana - In Bloom."
[Phil] - "That was Nirvana."
[Pandora] - "In Bloom for what?."
[Phil] - "I don't know - you know open to interpretation again. I don't know what he was thinking."
[Simon] - "Very hard to tell."
[Pandora] - "I'm Pandora and I'm in the studio with the very well behaved Phil Collen from Def Lepard and Simon Laffy from Girl and both of them together
make Man-Raze and both of them together were in Girl."
[Simon] - "Indeed."
[Phil] - "Ahh I see a pattern emerging. We have a theme."
[Pandora] - "And they will be playing on Tuesday night at a sold out gig but there may be some other tickets that one can squeeze out of somewhere. Where is the gig?."
[Simon] - "It's at The Spitz in Spitalfields in London."
[Phil] - "Yeah try saying that after a...."
[Simon] - "...Near Liverpool Street Station, they've got a website: spitz.co.uk S.P.I.T.Zed .co.uk. And they have a box office and there maybe some tickets there so please..."
[Pandora] - "And why Spitz?."
[Simon] - "erm because of Spitalfields..."
[Pandora] - "Why do I have to go all the way across London - across England to go to this gig to see you?."
[Simon] - "Because we're playing there."
[Phil] - "Absolutely! I had to fly all the way back from California to come here. And you're lucky I didn't say it cause I'd have said 'T Zee'.
There's a few little things there that I've - nasty little habits. However I do still sound English."
[Pandora] - "Oh yes you do, oh yes."
[Phil] - "So it's good. I've lived there for like 17 years so. I have two kids who are American but I've still, hung onto this. So that's good."
[Pandora] - "Englishness."
[Phil] - "I guess yeah."
[Simon] - "You can take the boy out of the East End but you can't take the East End out of the boy."
[Phil] - "Yeah absolutely, even if he does say Zee."
[Pandora] - "Well we've got 15 mins till JP wonders into the studio. He is next door doing, don't know what, he is waving and saying "Carry on", carry on madame.
And what are we carrying on with?."
[Phil] - "We are, ooh - pregnant pause, dead air. No more emails? no more juicy questions?."
[Pandora] - "Oh well I'll ask another question in a minute - no we were gonna play some Def Leppard. It was that one, that one there."
[Phil] - "Check this out! This is...."
[Pandora] :: "What's it called?."
[Phil] - "Well no let me build it up! (radio voice) You're listening to Radio Caroline and Uhh This is Def Leppard from their 1983 Pyromania album. This is Photograph!." (song plays)
[Pandora] - "Mmm isn't that fantastic."
[Phil] - "Oh thankyou."
[Pandora] - "Photograph and we've only got time for a couple more songs here in the Rock Box before JP comes in."
[Phil] - "You can't talk over my solo man! I was still soloing there at the end."
[Pandora] - "Do you want me to put it on again?."
[Phil] - "Please."
[Pandora] - "In the background."
[Phil] - "No really."
[Simon] - "On a loop."
[Pandora] - "It is it's on in the background, you can't hear it cause you've got headphones on. Anyway you're going to come back sometime?."
[Phil] - "We would love to actually, we've had a blast and we'll come back and play as well."
[Pandora] - "That'll be lovely if we can get the ship open again to the public maybe you can come and play on the ship."
[Phil] - "When the ship hits the fan! We'll be there."
[Pandora] - "So your schedule is Def Leppard now - well Tuesday's this wonderful gig and it's The Spitz Club in..."
[Phil] - "Spitalfields. Which, Spitalfields is Liverpool Street-ish."
[Simon] - "Can I just say we've got a website man-raze.com Please have a look on there it's got details about where we're playing, it's got details about the single..."
[Pandora] - "So are you gonna do any other gigs before 11th of October?."
[Phil] - "Well I think that's gonna be it for now - well I don't know, that is a point. We're rehearsed and we're good to go."
[Pandora] - "You never know. So what man dash raze R A Z E .com. Or look at my website pandorasbox.com you might see some snippets of info there.
And listen out also I'm sure you will be hearing the Man-Raze single on Radio Caroline at other times."
[Phil] - "Cool."
[Pandora] - "Very, very good. Couple more songs here. You wanted to play some Jimi Hendrix."
[Phil] - "We did again you know it was, the whole three-piece thing. It's great playing in a three-piece band, it's very liberating you can, not get away with murder but you can
actually do things that you wouldn't do in a you know a five-piece band or something. It has to be a kind of a set thing you can't just go off and improvise and expect everyone to go DING!
with you. With a three-piece you can so the big thing about Jimi Hendrix was, the Hendrix Experience was just like an amazing, especially for the time, it was so pioneering and it really
influenced you know what we're doing now, what we're all doing now so yeah we'd like to play a Hendrix song."
[Pandora] - "And why this one - 'Fire'?."
[Phil] - "'Cause we love it." (in accent)
[Simon] - "Yeah it's special." (song plays)
[Pandora] - "Jimi Hendrix 'Fire'. Sometimes when it's short and sweet it's still so wonderful."
[Phil] - "It is uh - like a knee trembler." (laughter)
[Pandora] - "Wos that then?."
[Phil] - "Well that's when you stand up against the wall and it's....apparently I've never actually done it myself but I've heard all about it."
[Pandora] - "About what?."
[Phil] - "The sexy thing. Apparently that's how my son was concieved."
[Pandora] - "But you don't remember?."
[Phil] - "No I do remember actually."
[Pandora] - "Right well that's it. Done, dusted, roasted, toasted for this week. I was Pandora, will always be Pandora and I'll be back next Saturday at 3pm in the afternoon.
And they: Phil Collen and Simon Laffy will be appearing as Man-Raze on Tuesday evening at The Spitz Club somewhere in London."
[Simon] - "Spitalfields and you will be there won't you."
[Pandora] - "I will be there if I can get across London - do you know the honour you have of me coming all the way across London?."
[Phil] - "Well I do actually I...."
[Simon] - "We'll send a police helicopter. It's the only way."
[Phil] - "Absolutely. Once you do that there's no going back."
[Pandora] - "And then Leppard are touring the States."
[Phil] - "Yes we start 11th of October till December with Bryan Adams he's playing with us too. Which is fun."
[Pandora] - "Excellent."
[Phil] - "He's great, and Cheap Trick actually they're also..."
[Pandora] - "Oh they're good. They're excellent. Wonderful."
[Phil] - "So we're doing that and then next year we have the Man-Raze album coming out, we're not sure exactly when and we have the Def Leppard thing happening as well the
Yeah! album which will be in March and then we'll be touring...after that Def Leppard, and Man-Raze whenever that is...at some point as well."
[Pandora] - "Well it'll be Def Leppard with Man-Raze I think, because I think it's the most logical way of doing it."
[Phil] - "It'll be cool yeah."
[Simon] - "Sounds good."
[Pandora] - "Man dash raze.com That's it what we leaving people with so I can write it down?."
[Simon] - "That's it. Best Of You!."
[Pandora] - "Best of who?."
[Simon] - "The Best Of You by the Foo Fighters on Radio Caroline."
[Pandora] - "OK thanks everyone JP's up next byee!. Have a good gig on Tuesday"
[Phil] - "Cheers thankyou."
[Simon] - "Thankyou.".
