Fan Review :: By Dan Clavadetscher

I had a chance to speak with Vivian Campbell in the green room of "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" Friday at CBS Television City in Los Angeles prior to Def Leppard's first national television appearance in support of the forthcoming "Yeah!" The band taped a two-song set later in the afternoon for broadcast at a future date.

When asked about the set length for both Journey and Def Leppard, Vivian clarified that each band will perform 80 minutes each, not 90 as has been previously reported. I also asked if he and his band mates still intended to play five songs from "Yeah!" He said "Hellraiser" would open each set and that they also will perform "Hanging On The Telephone" and (from the last tour) "Rock On" and "No Matter What."

Since they have rehearsed the song, Vivian said that he hoped they will be able to squeeze in "20th Century Boy," but "does not see how they will have time." He also said that "Joe (Elliott) will not be doing a lot of talking. We are going to play as many songs as we can." Campbell also stated that the band will not be performing "Foolin'" or anything from either "Slang" or "X."

Def Leppard opened "The Late Late Show" taping at 4:45 p.m. PT with a blistering, video-free version of "Rock On" that adhered closely to the recorded version on "Yeah!" Since the show is taped on a small soundstage, there was no room to possibly include the video screen that accompanied the song on the "Rock of Ages" tour. Following a brief break in which Elliott asked the gravely-voiced audience coordinator (known as Chunky B) if he "needed a lozenge," the band tore through their classic hit, "Animal."

Elliott's voice sounded strong and well rested, while the band was tight and in great spirits. In less than 10 minutes, the audience members and Leppard faithful were treated to a brief taste of the upcoming tour.
