Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Always a pleasure to be with you, you know that. I've got 60 minutes, one solid hour of phenomenal music in my humble opinion. It is very eclectic tonight. So let's get started, shall we? This is wonderful. This is Hawkwind."

Hawkwind

"Now for some of us plebs, the only thing Hawkwind are really known for is Silver Machine back in 1972, sung by Lemmy of course, if you're a Hawkwind fan, you'll know that. I have friends however who know their material inside out, upside down and back to front and I remember back in the mid-70s being dragged along to see Hawkwind at the Sheffield City Hall and I must say they were absolutely fantastic. And there, from I believe it was 1977, is the title track of their album, Quark, Strangeness And Charm."

Brian Eno

"And talking of, here's Eno."

"And before that we heard Brian Eno, doesn't get more weird and wacky than that, does it? It's from the album Here Come the Warm Jets, it is Needles in the Camel's Eye."

John Kongos

"I mean what you might call a round robin chain email, there's about 20 of us called My Gang and we email each other jokes and just various subjects and mostly it's music. Sometimes it's charts from way back when and a friend of mine sent in some charts from the 70s and one of these charts featured some amazing music that I realised I owned about 98% of because it was when I was the sponge, I was 10 years old and soaking up everything and one of the songs that got mentioned this week was that one and I thought I'd play it because unbeknownst to a lot of people, John Kongos, for it is him that we just heard, was actually involved in the Pyromania sessions. We recorded some keyboards and some programmed drum sessions at his studio in West London. He'd originated out of South Africa along with Mutt Lange which is why they were probably friends. So I thought I'd play it tonight. It was his second ever hit single and last, I believe, back in 1972, John Kongos from the album Kongos, the song Tokoloshi Man."

U2

"Now as we all know, Eno, once a member of Roxy Music, went on to become a very famous producer, specifically for this band, This Is U2."

"And before that, You Too produced by Brian Eno, of course, obviously very well known for his productions with David Bowie in the mid-70s, but that is from the 1987 album Joshua Tree and one of my favourite You Too songs of all time, Red Hill Mining Town."

Elton John

"Retired from the road but not necessarily from live performance and hopefully ready to make some new music, that is Elton John from an album that's often sadly overlooked from 1976. The album is Rock of the Westies, the song that we just heard, a wonderful bit of work called Billy Bones and the White Bird."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock, coming up, even in the quietest moments, we're always ready for a bit of Supertramp."

Supertramp

"And before that, we heard Supertramp from the album, even in the quietest moments, all 10 minutes and 52 seconds of Fool's Overture."

John Miles

"From his second album in 1976, which followed hot on the heels of the debut album Rebel a year earlier, which had the huge hit singles Music and High Fly, that is John Miles. The album is Stranger in the City, I saw him live at the Sheffield University on that particular tour. The song is called Slow Down and the riff very reminiscent of Babe Ruth's Wells Fargo."

Judas Priest

"So from an 11-minute epic to a tune that barely lasts three minutes, this is Judas Priest. "

"And before that we heard Judas Priest from the album Sad Wings of Destiny back in 1975 with The Ripper."

The Beatles

"From a band who will absolutely feature in my end of year round-up in a couple of weeks time, with some new music, that is The Beatles from the 62-66 Red album Best Of, if you like, with a 2022 remix by Giles Martin of the tune Tomorrow Never Knows."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always and I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time. So until then, I shall leave you with this and dedicate it to the late Shane McGowan. I was going to play a track from the Pogues album Rum Sodomy & the Lash , but I can't find it. It's almost 40 years old and rattling around somewhere in my house. In some dusty dark cobwebbed corner it probably lays, but I couldn't lay my hands on it today."

"So I'm going to play a song from a band that he truly admired and I know this because I've seen a photograph of him recently down the front at one of their gigs. From 1977, their debut album, this is The Clash and White Riot. Until next week, see ya!"
