Show Intro

"Greetings my fellow music lovers and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on, drum roll please, the wonderful Planet Rock. Coming to you this week all the way from Helsinki in Finland. And if you are at Download turn your radio off. Yes, you heard me right. Turn it off. Listen to the live bands. I am after all on again on Tuesdays and you can always use the Listen Again feature. And you're at Download. So listen to whoever's on stage right now. For all you folks at home, you're very welcome. I hope this next sixty minutes has got something titillating for you all. Let's get started with something that is very celebratory this week. That's your clue. This is E.L.O."

Electric Light Orchestra

"Oh yes Roll Over Beethoven indeed. For Def Leppard are Number One in many countries in the Classical Charts this week. Can you believe that?. I had to start the show off with that song, 'cause it's just, actually let's be honest who would have thought . If somebody had said to me back when we formed in 1977 that one day we would top the classical charts. In fact if somebody had said it to me during lockdown I would have probably burst out laughing. But here we are because we did the album with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Drastic Symphonies. It's gone in at Number One on the Classical Charts in pretty much a load of countries all over Europe and the States. And the UK which is an absolutely incredible achievement. So I figured I would start off with something that I heard when i was about 12 years old. We started off with a little bit of Beethoven. It's E.L.O.. It's taken from their album Early Years. And it is indeed, and very thoughtfully, Roll Over Beethoven."

Note - There are no classical charts on the Official UK Chart website that feature Def Leppard so unclear which chart Joe is referring to. But they were on the main album chart at #4 for one week before dropping out of the Top 100 and currently #6 on the Rock chart after being at #1 and then #2.

Def Leppard

"So just to give you a clue if you haven't heard anything from Drastic Symphonies. This is the kind of thing you're in for Let's give it a listen."

"And before that we heard Def Leppard. Originally recorded in 1981 for the High 'n' Dry album. Written by the late great Steve Clark. But this is the version that you hear on Drastic Symphonies. And you can really tell the difference with what the strings added to this The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Strings parts written by a fantastic gentleman called Eric Gorfain. That Def Leppard have been working with for about 7 or 8 years these days. He's worked with Page And Plant, Christina Aguilera. And many other fantastic artists. But he added his talents to our work from 42 years ago. And made a huge difference to the song Switch 625."

VEGA

"Absolutely brand spanking new music there from VEGA."

Ghost

"Now this is very interesting. Here's two Iron Maiden songs back to back. One of them by Iron Maiden. One of them not so much."

Iron Maiden

"I played them the other week because it was my 666th show for Planet Rock. it just seemed very appropriate. I play them this well because when we were based in Prague this week for six nights. Sharing the same hotel as Motley Crue. We were also sharing the same hotel with Iron Maiden. And we saw a few of them down in the bar. I saw Nicko. Had a nice long chat with Bruce at the bar. Where we put the world to rights. Compared war wounds. And it was a really really great night. So I wanted to play a song from Maiden tonight as well. And I chose the album Number Of The Beast once again 'cause I do think it's my favourite album that they ever made. The song Children Of The Damned. Not very often you hear acoustic guitars on an Iron Maiden tune."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock. On Download day. You'll have noticed so far that's it's been quite a theatrical show. Well after the break. That's not gonna change too much. We're gonna go and visit some Demons And Wizards."

Uriah Heep

"Before that we heard Uriah Heep. Still going. But from their deluxe edition of the album Demons And Wizards. Remastered in 2017. We heard the immortal The Wizard."

Groundhogs

"I was very sad to read this week that once again that pesky grim reaper has been doing the rounds ad taken one of our own. Namely Tony McPhee from the Groundhogs. Who I saw live about 1977 at the Sheffield Top Rank. Now that gentleman played some of the most eclectic and strange guitar riffs you're ever likely to hear. They were never the biggest band. But they were very well respected within the industry. And I have to say being the owner of a great compilation cassette put out by Polygram record called Street Fightin' Men. I was introduced to the Groundhogs through that with a fantastic song called Sins Of The Father. Which is the one that we just heard. Rest in peace Tony McPhee."

The Damned

"Well it's not gonna get any less dramatic now. In fact stepping right out of their comfort zone, this is The Damned."

New Seekers

"So while we were travelling from Prague to Sweden the other day. Myself, Sav and Phil were discussing The Who. And it came to light that both me and Sav both discovered that those two songs that we just heard, performed by the New Seekers, ever before we heard them by The Who. This freaked Phil out big time. So I said I'll play it for you on Saturday 'cause he's never heard the version that we heard by the New Seekers. And I think it's actually a pretty damn good version to be quite honest. It is Pinball Wizard/See Me Feel Me. Original versions obviously on Tommy. I think it opened up a whole new audience for The Who."

Show Outro

"And that my friends, all the way from Helsinki in Finland, is about it for this week. Been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time from Brussels in Belgium.

"So let's finish the way that we started. Very dramatic but let's also acknowledge that this gentleman had his 84th birthday this week. And he's still making new music. That is something worth celebrating. Once covered by my little side band the Down 'n' Outz. This is Ian Hunter and England Rocks. Until next week see ya!."
