The Rock Show with Johnnie Walker - 26th April 2024 Show Quotes

Johnnie Walker

"And Ozzy Osbourne opens up this week's edition of the Radio 2 Rock Show."

"Johnnie Walker here. Great to be with you."

"And on the show, Def Leppard's Joe Elliott will explain why it's an important This Week in Rock for his band."

"Ian Hunter and a new single from his latest album release that was called Precious."

"Defiance Part 2 came out last week, and the album contains loads of guest appearances, including the late Jeff Beck."

"On that track, we just played the late Taylor Hawkins on drums, Brian May on guitar, and Def Leppard's Joe Elliott on backing vocals."

"And that won't be the last of Joe that you hear on this show."

Johnnie Walker/This Week In Rock

"We're going to focus on this week in 2024. Def Leppard have reissued a 40th anniversary edition of their classic Pyromania album."

"Produced by Mutt Lange, it was the first to feature guitarist Phil Collen and propelled the band into the big time in America."

"The deluxe reissue features a whole load of demo versions and outtakes, one of which you'll hear in a moment."

"First though, frontman Joe Elliott has been in touch, and he sent me this, his thoughts on the album, and why it was such a landmark release for him and the band."

Joe Elliott

"Pyromania was such a massively important album for us, because back in early 1982 when we entered the studio, we'd made a collective and conscious effort to try and make an album that no traditional rock band had ever made before."

"In other words, we wanted to meld together the traditional sounds of a rock band with some of the newer sounds that had been coming out of the early 80s bands like The Human League and New Order."

"We really believed that we achieved this, and in January of 1983,when the album was released, it was a massive success in North America and Japan."

"But sadly, at the time, not so much in the UK."

"The lead single Photograph only peaked at number 41, which means it missed out on that all-important BBC Top 40 chart that may have just pushed it to being a bigger hit."

"That would come three and a half years later when Animal charted, and the Hysteria album went to number one."

"But however, no matter which way you look at it, the Pyromania album remains to this day a very important part of the Def Leppard catalogue."

Johnnie Walker

"That's the demo version of Def Leppard's Photograph, a big song for the band, but as Joe said, it actually never made the UK Top 40."

"The band are currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Pyromania album with a deluxe reissue."

"And as well as the original album, the new release also has three CDs containing previously unreleased live tracks, demo versions and outtakes."
