Show Intro

Greetings music lovers welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. It is always a pleasure to be with you. We have sixty minutes of everything lined up for you tonight. Including this beautiful run we're on of new music. Starting off with what else, you guessed it. Brand new AC/DC.

AC/DC

"Well the cat was kind of out of the bag about a year ago when some clandestine photographs appeared online of certain various members of what we thought were ex members of AC/DC. Were seen gathered together smoking cigarettes on the balcony of the back of a studio in Canada. So you put two and two together and you think ooh maybe they're making a new record and the truth is yes they are. It's out in a couple of weeks. It's gonna be called Power Up. It is AC/DC and the boys are back together again. Minus Malcolm of course. The album apparently has got a lot of songs written by Malcolm on it. But his role is being filled in by his nephew young Stevie Young. Who used to sell T-shirts for Def Leppard back in 1980. But Cliff Williams is back in the band and so of course is my beautiful best mate Mr. Brian Johnson. Who I was speaking to this week about the album. Telling him how brilliant he sounds on that song. Doesn't he sound amazing. It is AC/DC the album as I said Power Up out in a couple of weeks. The song we heard Shot In The Dark."

Sex Pistols

"So this week not only sees brand new AC/DC music. It also sees the 43rd anniversary of two classic albums that were released on exactly the same day back in 1977. Starting off with the national anthem."

"And before that from the Sex Pistols we heard the immortal God Save The Queen."

Queen

"Well you couldn't get two more very different bands could ya. Sex Pistols and Queen. There's a great story about the fact that when they were recording those albums they were in the same complex. And there was a moment in time. It's urban myth but relatively true. That Freddie Mercury and Sid Vicious went to the John for the same time for a leak. And as they were stood there doing their business Sid Vicious turned around to Freddie Mercury and went Alright Fred, still bringing ballet to the masses are you?. And Fred's response was something along the lines of Oh hello Mr. Ferocious nice to meet you. Oh to be a fly on the wall for that particular moment. We just heard there, with a little nod towards punk actually, in fairness. From the deluxe edition of Queen's News Of The World originally released in 1977 we heard the song Sheer Heart Attack. Not from the album of the same name mind you."

Alice Cooper

"Now as promised last week I'm gonna play a couple of tunes right now that I managed to snag this week that were on sale for last week's Record Store Day. And here's mu observations. Most of the things I've been able to get my hands on have been live recordings. And I'm wondering if that is because most artists don't want to rehash previously studio stuff. or they don't have a kind of plethora of unreleased material. Or are they releasing live material because they know that we as consumers are missing the live experience so much that these releases are going just that little bit towards helping us feel a little bit better."

"I don't know. Answers of a postcard. For this first song you might recognise the artist from the chanting at the top of the tune. But do you actually recognise the song itself. This is Alice Cooper'."

And before that we heard the mighty Cooper. Yes. Alice Cooper with his version of of an old Arthur Lee and Love tune called 7 And 7 Is. Originally released by Love back in 1966 but this particular live version recorded at the Apollo Theatre in Glasgow. Was recorded in 1982. Released this year for Record Store Day.

The Allman Brothers

"Beautiful stuff there from The Allman Brothers. The album is An Evening With The Allman Brothers First Set. So yes some lucky people back in what I think was about 1970 may have got to see them twice on the same night. The song is the beautiful Melissa."

You are listening to The Joe Elliott Show on the wonderful Planet Rock. It's time for a little break, and when we come back, well there but for the grace of god goes Fish."

Fish

"And before that the might Fish. Brand new Fish. What a record. I've played this thing like five times already this week. It's a fantastic bit of work. It's almost 90 minutes long. The production is beyond reproach. It's actually outstanding. And if this is Fish's farewell album, what a way to go out. The reason I am eulogising so much on this record. And Fish is not even dead and we all know that. But it may well be the last thing we ever heard from him. Is the reason I'm dragging this out is 'cause I don't know how to pronounce the album title. I think it may well be Weltschmerz. Which apparently is German for world weariness. I know how you feel son I really do. So there you are brand new Fish. The album Veltsmeert. I think. The song, the opening track, The Grace Of God."

Supertramp

"I adore that band. I always have and I always will. I saw them live in 1975 at the Sheffield City Hall when they were promoting that Crisis What Crisis album. But the great thing about the show was they played nearly all if not all of their previous album. That fantastic fantastic bit of work that is Crime Of The Century. The song we just heard from that album is Hide In Your Shell. The band of course Supertramp."

UFO

"So after that tongue tangler how about something that's just a little easier to digest. Here live from Youngstown in 1978. And another Record Store Day release are UFO."

"And before that UFO live from Youngstown in Ohio in 1978. So it is essentially an extension of their official live album Strangers In The Night. This one's a bit more rough around the edges. But it's very good sounding indeed. The song we heard Hot N' Ready."

Judas Priest

"One of the the Record Store Day releases I've come across that that's Identical as far as I'm aware to the original. There are now bonus tracks. It is possible that the vinyl's coloured because mine is still shrink wrapped. But under that cellophane there is an embossed sleeve and it looks absolutely amazing. And I bet if you touch it, mine's still sealed, it feels good too. It is Judas Priest. The album Sad Wings Of Destiny. The song we heard is The Ripper."

Dr. Feelgood

"So from hot and ready to a bit of rough and ready. This is Dr. Feelgood."

"And before that Dr. Feelgood from their debut album also found on the Singled Out The A-Sides collection. The fantastic Roxette."

Tuff Darts

"Recorded live at CBGB's in New York. That is the Tuff Drats. It's from a collection called Punk And Post Punk From The 80s And Beyond. the song one covered actually by American Ram Jam. As in Black Betty fame. The song is All For The Love Of Rock N' Roll."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time."

"So until then I'll leave you with this. This next artist had a fantastic knack of putting songs on the B-Sides of his singles that were arguably as good as if not better than the A-Sides. Here from the 1972 single Children Of The Revolution. One of two songs that were on the B-Side of that particular release is Marc Bolan and T. Rex with Sunken Rags. Until next week see ya."
