Planet Rock 21st February 2020 - Joe Elliott Interview Quotes - (Transcribed by dltourhistory)

Def Leppard Let's Get Rocked on Planet Rock. The winner of Best British Band at the 2020 Rock awards. Joe Elliott of Def Leppard you've had a good day two awards for Def Leppard and one for the Down 'n' Outz.

"I'm absolutely gobsmacked as they say. It's very humbling and it's so exciting. I mean I've been doing this for 42 years and you still get a buzz and the hairs on your arms stick up when you get a result like that you know."

"It's incredible for Leppard to win live...we had an amazing audience when we did the Hysteria tour at the end of 2018. And then to kind of come back and do Donington last summer was obviously the icing on the cake. Which has obviously helped a lot I suppose you know."

"So it's fantastic to get this vote. It really is."

Surprisingly Def Leppard first time winners. It's been going 7 years or 6 years. This is the 7th edition of the Rocks and this is the first time you've got a Rocks and you've managed to save it up and get two. It's like buses.

"Yes, just like London buses isn't it. Yeah amazing you know. In fairness the popularity of Def Leppard does kind of ride waves. Depending on how often we rear our heads. But it is a fantastic achievement after all this time to be able to think that. You know if somebody had of said to me when we got together in 1978 that you're gonna be winning these awards in 2020 you'd have laughed them off the planet." "It's such a testimony to our fans and the hard work that we've put in to maintain a relationship with our fans. And we're just so grateful that these things come along and we get to enjoy them."

And the Down 'n' Outz I would have suggested would be fairly rank outsiders against the likes of The Who, Jeff Lynne's ELO and Status Quo in Best British Album. But you've beaten all of then to take a third Rocks for you personally.

"Again kind of scary considering that this was a band that were put together ten years ago for a one off 45 minute performance opening for Mott The Hoople. Which went down so well we were kind of press ganged into making that first album. Which led us to making the second."

"Which led us to making the third and going you know what let's push the boundaries here and write this one. And I guess the songs just resonated with people."

"It's phenomenal that all those fans, you know, the fans of all those bands have embraced the Down 'n' Outz as if. You know we're all in agreement here that it is a side project. But we do take it seriously enough to want to do it well you know."

"And I do believe it is a great record. Did I think it stood a chance of winning?. Absolutely not. Not when you're up against the likes of, you know, the Wayward Sons album is a wonderful record. The Darkness album same thing."

"I'm absolutely beyond belief that that we've come above like The Who and Jeff Lynne's ELO. It's fantastic and again you just can't thank the fans enough for it."

Well well done to you. You've got at the very least three brand new door stops for the house.

"Yeah I've gotta clear some space. I mean we don't win that many awards, but you know these things are gonna be pride of place for a good few years now."
