DEF LEPPARD Aborted Planned Dublin Recording Session Due To Lockdown

Def Leppard 2019. By Chele Drappel

Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott revealed the band's planned recording session in March was aborted due to the current lockdown.

Joe was speaking last night on another edition of his weekly Planet Rock radio show.

The session was due to have taken place at the end of March but Joe said Vivian's guitar tech Dave Wolff is currently stranded at his home after travelling to be there on the same day as the lockdown went into effect.

This has prevented both Phil and Sav from attending the session which Joe described as a "recording session".

Dave is currently living at Joe's home after recently spending six weeks there doing work for him on a separate trip.

New Def Leppard Album Writing Session

Vivian had spoken in recent interviews dating back to late February of a session to be attended by Joe, Phil and Sav at the end of March which at that time he could not attend due to Last In Line shows (since postponed).

The writing/recording session was due to take place in Dublin and described by Vivian as an "initial writing session".

He suggested one or more of the band must have a new song ready to go which they are excited about.

However now, along with everything else, those plans will have to wait but there is still no word on the postponement and rescheduling of The Stadium Tour which must be coming soon.

The Joe Elliott Show - 4th April 2020 Quotes

Orange Goblin

"Dave Wolff. Affectionately known as Wolfie. Def Leppard's backline crew chief and Vivian Campbell's guitar tech. Who happens to be living with me for the next what? six, seven months. Could be a couple of years. He flew in for an aborted recording session, an aborted recording session that we were gonna do. He was in the air when the lock down kicked in. So we kind of, you know, we have this unintentional house guest."

"But he's good fun to have around and when he's mending guitars he tends to listen to stuff like this. He introduced me to this band. I heard them through the wall many times to realise that they're actually very very good indeed. They are Orange Goblin. The album is Back From The Abyss. The song we just heard Sabbath Hex."

Next Def Leppard Album

"I heard that rumour too. No I heard it in an email. I think Joe and Phil and Sav are getting together in the next couple of weeks to start working on something."

"Unfortunately by the time I got wind of the schedule I was already booked to do some shows with Last In Line. But it's just an initial writing session. ."

"You know Joe's always writing songs. In fact everyone in this band is always writing songs. We always have something in our back pocket."

"So someone obviously has a burning desire and a song that they really believe in and get the ball rolling. So having said that it's just an initial session and Def Leppard records take a long time to come together."

"So, you know, we'll be together pretty soon to start rehearsals for the tour and in fact we have a one-off show in Mexico on Mat 1st, a festival date.."

"So we'll be rehearsing for a week or ten days before that and you know that's when we'll probably start to swap ideas and talk about a schedule. But realistically it'll be next year before we get in to actually make a record of any shape you know."

Great to hear that you guys are going that direction/New Music

"Well it's important. I mean people say what is the point. 'Cause even a band of Def Leppard's stature world wide, you know, we don't sell an awful lot of records comparatively. You know when you compare it to the heydays of the '80s."

"I don't think anyone really does. Def Leppard or any act you know. But that's not really the point. the point is, you know, you've gotta keep creative. You've gotta keep creative as a unit or as individuals. And like I said we're always writing songs you know and it's important to flew that muscle."

"And you know even if we only sold a dozen copies of a record. You know we'd still do it because it's important for us to keep the band vital you know."

"And that vitality is incumbent upon the band in writing and recording new music you know. We gotta keep moving forward."

New Def Leppard Music

"It is yeah but we are starting to think about the next record. We're having writing sessions ongoing over the year. I mean it won't be anything out in 2020 but, you know, we are starting to schedule a new album which is kind of long overdue you know."

"Yeah yeah indeed. But we do keep busy I mean aside from Leppard shows we all have kids. We're at that time of life you know. So you kind of do like you said earlier withdraw from your industry for a while and just kind of focus on your family and your home life."
