VIVIAN CAMPBELL Says DEF LEPPARD Rehearsing Rare Songs For VEGAS Residency

Def Leppard 2018. By dltourhistory

Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell was recently interviewed by the Canadian press and mentioned the Las Vegas residency.

Vivian spoke to Trent of the The Thunder Underground Podcast to promote the Last In Line album and the Las Vegas residency.

The interview took place last week just after the European tour ended.

Vivian talked about Last In Line II, LIL touring, Phil Soussan, Last In Line History, Bands With Soundalike New Singers, Van Halen, Third Last In Line Album, Sin City Residency, playing rare songs live, the Slang album, another Def Leppard album, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and scheduling time off.

Vivian suggests the band will play songs they have not played in many years at the second Vegas residency. The short list he mentions might feature some of the fan requests including Lady Strange and perhaps even songs from later album like Adrenalize and Slang and beyond.

He is also once again quite vague about the recording of new music in 2020. Anywhere from one song to a full album might be recorded.

Listen to the full 30 plus minute interview below.

Vivian's part runs from 33:51 mins until 1 hour 6 mins.

Pyromania Residency?

"No there was a talk about that, you know, the difficulty with doing and indeed to a lesser extent that was an issue doing this Hysteria residency. Is that you take any record it's not really long enough to be the basis of a whole show. You know even the Hysteria record only comes in at forty something minutes. If you look at the time the run time on the Pyromania record I think it's 30 something minutes you know."

"So that in and of itself isn't gonna be enough for a show. With the Hysteria residency we broke the show into essentially three parts. With the middle part just being a video presentation a tribute to Steve Clark essentially. And set up the main act which was Def Leppard doing Hysteria. And the first part of the show was actually for me I think the most fun part. Was we were out own opening act, you know, we went out as a band called Ded Flatbird. And did a bunch of, you know, deeper album cuts and more obscure tracks."

"And that was great fun, you know, we set up like an old school opening act in front of a curtain with no real production or presentation and then after the video the curtains opened and there was Def Leppard with the big old production doing Hysteria. So it was a really well presented show."

2019 Sin City Las Vegas Residency

"This time out we, to be honest we're just about to start our stadium run of shows this weekend and we have a couple of days to set up there. I know we're leaving a little bit to the last minute. But that's actually the next couple of weeks is when we're gonna decide on what the, what this next Vegas residency is actually gonna entail."

"So it's gonna be a very busy couple of weeks for us. We're gonna have to do a lot of homework. You know on days off and stuff and go in an practice and kind of work on a few tunes. There's a bit of a short list flying around. I can tell you there's quite a few songs on there that we haven't played in many many many years. So everyone has been given their homework. Put it that way."

"We've actually been really busy. We just flew in. We played in Barcelona night before last and flew in to the States yesterday. I'm currently in Boston. So I've got my guitar with me and I've got an email with a bunch of songs. It's not really time off but sure it's all good."

Rare Song Discussions

"Yeah we do we have discussions. Joe is and has always been, you know, the heart of the band and Joe really thinks these things through and he always has great suggestions about what we should be playing and why we should be playing them you know."

"I mean it's one thing for any of us to think of a song from an earlier album and say oh let's play that. But you know it's easier said than done you know. Joe usually manages to have a clear cut logical reason for playing a particular song. And then that makes a lot of sense. He always tries to think of it as a show. And that's why he's the lead singer you know. He has that thought process where he kind of thinks it through, you know, 'cause he knows that he's gonna be the guy singing it and gonna be the guy talking in between and it has to make sense to him. You know if it makes sense to him it'll make sense to the rest of the rest of us."

Another Def Leppard Album?

"Yeah there's some songs on the go. I mean everyone in the band is a song writer. That's one of the great strengths about Leppard, you know, we all have something going on at sometime. And I know that at some point in 2020 we'll start to record something.Mow I don't know if that something will be one song or four songs or an entire album or whatever."

"But that will have to sort itself out, you know. We'll start with whatever we feel is the strongest of the individual ideas that are flown around at the time. And, you know, it's always as they say a fluid situation you know. We're still formulating what our tour plans might be for 2020 and obviously we've gotta work around that also. And in addition we all have children and wives and home lives and health issues. You know things that we have to kind of fit in the schedule. So it's hard to, it's hard to say anything for sure."
