Download Festival 2019 – Friday Highlights By Download Festival + 1 Photo

"Lighters instantly go up in the air and arms are flung round shoulders in the crowd for the raw passion of 1995 classic, ‘When Love and Hate Collide’. But, once again Def Leppard aren’t going to let the energy drop as Joe utters the immortal words every Downloader wants to hear, ‘do you want to get rocked?’ and ‘Let’s Get Rocked’ howls out and Donington loses it’s collective mind."

"Before ‘Rock Of Ages’, Joe takes time to show love for Download saying it’s exactly 10 years since the band first headlined in 2009. Saying what we all feel, he says Donington Park is a “very spiritual place”, giving a special mention to drummer Rick Allen as who could forget the band’s performance at Monsters Of Rock, the first show for the band after Rick’s accident, in 1986."

"The task of opening the Main Stage proceedings fell to American heavy metallers Last in Line."

"The band, comprising of former members of Dio, drew in the early crowd with a pleasing set complete with a masterful performance from guitarist Vivian Campbell, who would later grace the Main Stage with Friday headliners, Def Leppard."

"As the sun began to set on the first day of Download Festival 2019, Friday headliners Def Leppard took to the stage. Complete with big screen production, the Leppard faithful enjoyed a massive hit of nostalgia, as they played seminal album Hysteria in full."

"A band you hoped would steal the show as headliner didn't really hit it off with the crowd."

"The Leppard faithful were there in force though, but movement was at a minimum, as their fans reflected the band's with a rather static showing."

"An early performance of 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' saw most vacate the main stage before a seemingly never ending set came to a conclusion shortly before 11pm."

"Following Whitesnake and Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy And The Conspirators, British hard rock heroes Def Leppard brought their Hysteria tour to the hallowed ground of Castle Donington. Having toured it all over the globe last year, climaxing at London’s Wembley Arena, Joe Elliot and co. brought the ultimate ’80s party vibes with a slick, polished show, flanked by giant screens as they belted out Animal, Let’s Get It Rocked and (of course) Pour Some Sugar On Me."

Download festival review – fire, fury and hymns to the dark side By The Guardian

"Fortunately, there’s no disputing Def Leppard’s headlining prowess. Playing the all-conquering Hysteria in its entirety, they sound immaculate and vastly more engaged and spirited than they did last time they topped the bill here in 2011. Let’s Get Rocked is still horrid, however."

Sheffield’s Def Leppard Create Hysteria At Download Festival By The Yorkshire Times + 2 Photos

"Def Leppard took the decision to play in its entirety their 1987 classic album Hysteria for their headline slot on Friday night. The Sheffield band were worthy headliners – it showed how an album released 32 years ago still sounds good today. The songs from that album were the benchmark that many bands still look to today. Women, Rocket and Pour Some Sugar On Me thrilled a capacity audience."

"Fittingly there was a tribute to the band’s guitarist Steve Clark who died in 1991 – Clark was the guitarist and main songwriter in the band who wrote a lions share of the songs on the Hysteria album."

"Midway through the set vocalist Joe Elliott leads the tributes to sadly departed guitarist Steve Clark – with the on-stage video screen introducing Steve playing a solo to a screaming 80s crowd – bassist Rick Savage standing in a classic rock pose to salute Steve. A poignant moment. One-armed drummer Rick Allen also gets well deserved plaudits from Joe with the crowd rippling loud and long applause. After Rick was caught in a horrendous car crash in 1985 where he lost his left arm the band’s first gig was playing the former Monsters Of Rock festival: thus Donington has a special place in the bands hearts. Rick also shows no sign of waning, looking like a cat whose lapped up its cream, smile abroad on his face throughout the show."
