Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome once again to The Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. Just a few days short of Def Leppard's residency starting up in Las Vegas. 12 shows over three weeks. Can't wait for that."

"Got some wonderful music for ya lined up tonight and I'm gonna start off this one. A band we're gonna feature throughout the show tonight. This is Mott."

Mott

"Yeah gonna feature a couple more songs by Mott throughout the show tonight because sadly this week it had been announced that Nigel Benjamin the singer in Mott had passed away in his home about 90 minutes north of Los Angeles. Now truth is he'd been out of the music industry for decades and decades. But he was a big influence on me as a kid. When I first started working with Mutt Lange and we were looking for a higher register for me to sing in I suggested what you mean something like this guy and I would play him some of the stuff by Mott. And he'd say yeah that should work. And so he was a major influence on the higher register of my voice and I was such a fan of that band. After Mott the Hoople spilt up they were left in a bit of a quandary and after Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson went solo they had to find a new singer and a new guitarist. They found a fantastic guitarist in Ray Majors and they wanted a singer that wasn't an Ian Hunter clone and that's exactly what they got in Nigel Benjamin. And there he's featured from their second album in 1976. The title track that we just heard Shouting And Pointing."

Crossfire Eagles

"So as one of my early heroes passes over we move on to a brand new generation. Yes the new Savage generation. This is the Crossfire Eagles."

"And before that Crossfire Eagles featuring Tyler Savage son of Rick. Brand new song for ya called All You Know. Yeah they're getting better with every new release. Keep it up lads you never know what might happen and that's no myth."

Jet

"You forget how good that band were. They really really did have something special didn't they. They are Jet. Not the English Jet from the 70s but that's the Australian Jet from the 90s I suppose of the early noughties. The album is Shine On. The song we heard Stand Up."

Michael Penn

"And before that Michael Penn. Yes brother of Sean. From the album March with a great bit of work called No Myth."

Mott

"Another great example of the fantastic range that Nigel Benjamin had. And also let's not forget the formidable song writing partnership that could have been if they stuck together. Himself and Morgan Fisher who wrote that song. A great bit of work again from the album Shouting And Pointing in 1976. That is Mott with a song called Career, open brackets, No Such Thing As Rock 'n' Roll, close brackets."

"You are listening to the Joe Elliott Show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. It is time for a little break, and when we come back, for your pleasure a little bit of Roxy Music."

Roxy Music

"And before that fellow Rock And Roll Hall of Fame nominees 2019. That is Roxy Music the title track of the album For Your Pleasure."

Cockney Rebel

"Couple of bands there back to back often referred to as Art Rock. It's just all rock and roll to me though. That is Cockney Rebel featuring the wonderfully talented Steve Harley. The album is The Human Menagerie. The song that we just heard What Ruthie Said."

The Stooges

"So from Art Rock to pioneers of Punk Rock. It's hard to imagine that this album was released 50 years ago this week. Featuring Iggy Pop this is The Stooges."

"And before that yes 50 years old. Seven years before Punk Rock really took hold. The Stooges from their debut album with the aptly titled 1969."

The Hives

"Yeah listening to The Stooges this week put all the bands that they may have influenced in mind for me. I'm thinking all the groups that came out of the UKin the mid 70s. But also bands that followed much much later like that crowd. The Hives from the album Veni Vidi Viciouss. That is Main Offender."

Pat Travers

"One has to say though that although Punk Rock was making the big splash in 1976. So was this guy. This guy is Pat Travers."

"And before that Pat Travers who broke through in '76but that is actually from his second album in 1977 which features Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden on the drums. The album is Makin' Magic. The You Don't Love Me."

Be-Bop Deluxe

"Couple of guitar players there bucking the trend of what was happening in '75/'76/'77. Wakefield's finest Be-Bop Deluxe. That is the brand new stereo mix from the album Futurama originally released in 1975 and produced by Roy Thomas Baker. The song Maid In Heaven."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a real pleasure as always. Albeit tainted with a certain amount of sadness due to the passing of one of my early heroes Mr. Nigel Benjamin. However I shall be back with you next week at exactly the same time from Viva Las Vegas."

"So until then I'm gonna leave you with one more song from Mott. And it's testimony to the singer and the songs that all three songs that I played tonightI have covered with the Down 'n' Outz. All three songs come from the album Shouting And Pointing. And this is Mott's version of the old Easybeat classic Good Times. Until next week rest in peace Nigel Benjamin."
