Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott was recently interviewed by Rolling Stone when in New York for the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony.

Joe spoke to Rolling Stone recently to promote the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction.

Joe talked about the first concert he attended, Def Leppard band name, first time on stage, The Def Leppard E.P., first American show in 1980, first time hearing DL on the radio, PSSOM, Mariah Carey BOTH cover, Rick Allen's 1986 comeback shows and meeting David Bowie.

First Concert

"The first concert I ever attended was at the Sheffield City Hall .in 1971 as an 11 year old kid and I saw T. Rex. I'd never been to a concert before. I'd seen people playing on TV and I was absolutely shocked at the noise in this place. And how big in 1971 the Sheffield City Hall looked. "

"Cut to nine years later we played there and I went down for the soundcheck. I stood where Marc Bolan stood and looked back at where I was stood watching Bolan nine years previously. And I couldn't believe how small this place looked it was incredible."

The Def Leppard Name

"The phrase, the name, the two words Def Leppard first came to me in school in 1975. I was in art class and I begged the teacher to please please can we stop drawing fruit and flowers and daises. And he said what do you wanna do. I said I wanna do posters for rock shows and he said fine. So I started doing posters for real bands like The Beatles and the Stones and Thin Lizzy."

"And then eventually I started making names up and Def Leppard was one of them. It just sounded good. It was spelt correctly when I did it. It only changed to the miss spelling that we use these days after the band formed. I had the name two years before the band."
