Show Intro/Van Halen

"Opening tonight with Mean Street that was Van Halen or Van Ha-len as we thought it was first pronounced. Norn Iron and all that. From the 1981 album Fair Warning. Personally I really really enjoyed early Van Halen. But sure how could you not? It was raw. It was basic, direct exciting rock and roll."

"Welcome back anyway. I am Viv Campbell. This is show number four in this series of ill advised shows."

Last In Line

"Last week I wrapped up the show with a song from the album Heavy Crown from a side project band of mine. A band called Last In Line. And I'd like to continue the story of that this week. But before we get into that here's another song from the album. This is Starmaker."

"Starmaker from the album Heavy Crown. Heavy Crown was an album released in early 2016 featuring myself on guitar. Drummer Vinny Appice. Bassist Jimmy Bain and a great but a relatively unknown singer called Andrew Freeman. As I mentioned at the close of last week's show Jimmy, Vinny and I were the band who wrote and recorded and toured with Ronnie James Dio in the original DIO band of the early to mid 1980s. And the albums we were responsible for were Holy Diver, Last In Line and Sacred Heart. And about a year or so after Ronnie had passed away we regrouped to form this band and taking our name from the second DIO album we called ourselves Last In Line. Appropriately enough. And set out doing a few shows here and there. We had very limited ambitions. Just playing the songs from the early career with DIO."

"But a few years later we were offered the chance to write and record an album of new and original music and Heavy Crown was the result. Jimmy sadly passed away in January of 2016 about a month before the album's release and so it was his last ever work. And you know Jimmy loved the band so much he actually went out. He got the band's name and logo tattooed on his arm and it was the only tattoo he had. And anyway we always dedicate that song Starmaker to Jimmy at every show we've played ever since. Ex Ozzy Osbourne bassist Phil Soussan joined us later in 2016 and allowed us to be able to continue as a band."

"And in fact just this very past week we delivered what will be our second album from the Last In Line band. Or LIL as we're becoming known around the world. New album, very excited about that. That'll be released at the start of next year. 2019. And the lead single and video I believe is coming some time next month. So watch out for that."

Cheap Trick

"That was California Man from Cheap Trick's 1978 album Heaven Tonight. A song originally written and recorded by The Move. And the reason I'm playing that is because we, Def Leppard we, just finished up a 60 date North American co-headline tour with Journey that we started back in May of this year. Playing mostly in arenas but the tour also included about ten or so baseball stadiums. Including some of the most historic like Fenway Park in Boston and Wrigley Field in Chicago and so on. And it's been a really really exciting summer for us to perform in these famous old ballparks and when we do play in those stadiums we'd always add a third act to the bill. And Cheap Trick played most of those shows with us over the summer. We've known them for many many years and they're a great joy to work with. Wonderful people and in fact we'll be bringing them with us when we play in UK and Ireland this December."

Riverdogs

"But speaking of California that's actually where I'm recording this show from as we just tonight ended the tour with a couple of shows here at the Los Angeles Forum. It's been a busy busy few months I'll tell ya. We move on to Asia next weekend by way of a couple of shows in Hawaii no less. But you know it's a tough gig but we don't shirk our responsibilities here at Def Leppard Inc."

"The Revolution Starts Tonight from the album California by Riverdogs. Yet another band I occasionally write and record with. I know I know it's hard to keep up isn't it. Realise more and more I really do need to write a book to put all this in order. Quite confusing.

AC/DC

"From California by way of Hawaii to Japan then Australia and New Zealand. That's where the next shows will be recorded as the Def Leppard tour moves on through Asia. So thinking along those geographical lines my mind goes to the land Down Under. And no I'm not gonna play Men At Work. I'm gonna go full AC/DC."

"AC/DC that was Hells Bells. In a previous show I played a track from the Highway To Hell album and recounted my Ulster Hall visit to catch AC/DC there back in 1979. And I'm really glad I did 'cause it would turn out that that would be the last show and possibly the only show, I don;t know, that Bon Scott ever played in Ireland. Sadly he passed away shortly after. Remarkably the band managed to pick up the pieces and not only did they find a new singer in Brian Johnson but pretty much exactly a year to the day from the release of the Highway To Hell album they put out what was to be not only their biggest ever album but one of the biggest ever albums in the history of rock music. That album Back In Black was produced by a chap called Mutt Lange. I've had the pleasure of working with Mutt. Or to be exact I've actually, I've been in the room when he's working. Mutt is perhaps the talented person I've ever encountered in my time in the music business. Shame on him really I mean he's gotta leave something on the table for the rest of us hacks. But I mean he seriously is so far ahead of everyone else in the room. And no one should be that good."

Def Leppard

"Not only was Mutt responsible for shaping the Back In Black album for AC/DC. But he also had a big big hand in a couple of other records that you may be familiar with. A wee record called Pyromania being one and then there was another wee album called Hysteria that he also that he also happened to co-write and produce."

"Def Leppard from the album Hysteria. That was Gods Of War. We, the Def Leppard we, will be performing that song and indeed that entire album and more this December when we play Ireland and UK but moving on."

Foreigner

"That was Foreigner from the album Foreigner 4 and Juke Box Hero. And guess who produced that album?. It's becoming tiresome isn't it?. Yes, it's that annoying overachiever Robert John 'Mutt' Lange. I wonder was he ever bullied at school?.

Journey

"As I mentioned we just wrapped up the extensive North American tour with Journey. That was only the second ever time that Def Leppard has toured with Journey. The previous tour being back in 2006. That was also a massively successful tour for both bands. And Journey are of course a San Francisco band and we happened to recently at the baseball stadium there. AT&T Park it's called currently. Just a couple of weeks ago and incidentally Foreigner opened that show for us and yes they did play Juke Box Hero. But much like Def Leppard Journey have a shed load of hits. Which I suppose is why people still turn out in droves to see them. And that night in San Francisco no song got a bigger cheer perhaps than this one. Their ode to their home town. This is Lights. Enjoy."

"Lights from Journey our North American touring partners over this past summer and it's just been a great great tour. A great experience and I know everyone's had a good time and we've really enjoyed it. So until next time we wish those guys well."

The Undertones

"Now I'm gonna tale a step back here and revisit my past again. In the first show I did I mentioned how my sister Fiona always loudly played punk rock blasting from her teenage bedroom. And as a young aspiring hard rock guitarist I probably had in my head so far up my behind that I didn't always maybe hear the virtue in a lot of what punk had to offer. But thanks to Fiona's subversive influences. And not so subversive maybe. I was able to absorb what maybe at the time I couldn't fully comprehend or understand. And so like many things in life perspective adds a completely different level of comprehension and appreciation. At the time I just thought these guys were a bunch of wee Derry wans in parkers. This is The Undertones a song that got them rolling. This is Teenage Kicks."

Ricky Warwick

"Undertones and Teenage Kicks. Perhaps the song that put Norn Iron squarely on the New Wave map."

"Another local chap who like myself qualified as young at the time was Ricky Warwick. Ricky grew up between Belfast area and Glasgow which I believe qualifies him as a total nut job. In any event I didn't actually know Ricky while I was here in Ireland. There in Ireland sorry, you know I'm in Los Angeles. But I only got to meet him many many years later when as a solo artist he opened some shows for Def Leppard in the early 2000s. And by this time Ricky had been in and out of a few bands. Most famously of which was perhaps The Almighty. A band that he fronted. Unbeknowns to both of us at that time we would later go on to perform together whilst Def Leppard was on hiatus in a version of Thin Lizzy in early 2011. And Ricky in fact still performs with Thin Lizzy while my time there was very strictly limited. It was kinda like being on loan in the off season sort of thing you know."

"Ricky's had a few solo albums released under his name. Back when he was opening the shows for Def Leppard Ricky had just released an album called Tattoos And Alibis and after a couple of shows I ended up getting on stage with Ricky every night to perform this song. This is Three Sides To Every Story."."

"Ricky Warwick and Three Sides To Every Story and the longer I live the more truth I see in that particular sentiment. Perhaps that's more true in Norn Iron than anywhere else. Who knows?."

Deep Purple

"A few shows back I was waffling on about Deep Purple and in particular the Deep Purple lineup that recorded the album Come Taste The Band. I had mentioned that Sweet Savage performed a few of those songs as part of our early shows. One of which in particular was a song called Love Child. So here's the originally and I hope that none of you had the misfortune to witness the Sweet Savage version."

Show Outro

"Love Child from Deep Purple from the album Come Taste The Band as I mentioned my favourite ever Deep Purple album. And that's it for this show number four of the series. I am Viv Campbell and as always it's been a great pleasure to be with you and I'll leave you with this. Think for a minute it's 1978. You're a sixteen year old aspiring guitar player and you realise this guy's from your home town. He's one of us. And if that's the case then perhaps you too could just, maybe just achieve some sort of level of success. I was challenged, I was inspired truly and this is from the 1978 album Back On The Streets. My hero Gary Moore. Hurricane. I'm Viv Campbell and I'll see ya anon."
