Listen To DEF LEPPARD's Cover Of DEPECHE MODE's Personal Jesus
Def Leppard's new 2018 tour countdown intro features a cover of a Depeche Mode classic which is now available to listen to.
During the pre-show PA music a cover of Depeche Mode's 'Personal Jesus' has been played as the 30 minute countdown clock ends.
The new version has been heard by fans since the first show in Hartford, CT on 21st May.
This is very likely to have been the cover song recorded on 16th May at Spotify's studios in New York.
The Spotify Singles session featured one original song and one cover and will be released soon. Joe commented on the session in an interview with Eddie Trunk.
This Def Leppard version stays true to the electronic sound of the original with thumping bass and programmed electronic drums. Like the cover of 'Rock On' it has been Leppardised with rocking guitars added. Especially in the outro section.
A fan filmed most of the song as it played at the end of the new video screen countdown intro in Pittsburgh, PA on 2nd June.
The original was released in August 1989 and eventually included on their classic 1990 album 'Violator'. It reached Number 13 in the UK and Number 28 in the USA.
It has been previously covered by the likes of Marilyn Manson and Johnny Cash. Listen to the original below.
As you may have noticed the Albums/Astronaut section of the current intro was abandoned after the Hartford show and now the 'Are You Excitable?' audio plays after the countdown has ended.
Listen to almost three minutes of the song in the first Playlist video plus the two previously mentioned clips from Hershey. The length of the original song was 3:44.
The studio photo shown below (from the TourBook website for Hartford, CT) is possibly from the recording session for this song. Joe can be seen in the vocal booth behind Phil being filmed.

Trunk Nation - Joe Elliott Interview Quotes
Spotify Singles Session
"So we're based in the New York area let's say because we're kind of back and forth everywhere round Manhattan doing stuff. We were in a place called S.I.R. which is a very famous rehearsal space where Bowie and everybody in the world's probably used it, The Who. We were in there for a couple of days rehearsing for a, the tour and b, for a session that we did for Spotify. I don't know whether I'm allowed to mention then on your show. Yeah we did a session for them. Just two songs. I won't say any more because I don't want to spoil the surprise for whenever it's gonna get broadcast, but bit of fun. One of ours and a cover of somebody else's stuff ."
