25 Years Ago DEF LEPPARD's HAVE YOU EVER At Number 12 In The USA

Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad 1992.

Def Leppard's classic single Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad reached Number 12 in the USA on this day in 1992.

The third single to be released from the Adrenalize album.

It had been released on 4th August 1992 and followed on from 'Make Love Like A Man' and 'Let's Get Rocked' as their third hit of the year.

It peaked at Number 12 in its 11th week on the chart having entered at 94 on the 22nd August.

15 weeks were spent inside the Top 40. The highest charting single from the 'Adrenalize' album in the USA.

The chart run of 20 weeks makes it one of only four singles to spend 20 or more weeks on the Billboard chart. The others being 'Two Steps Behind' (1993) and 'PSSOM', 'Love Bites' (both 1988).

In later years various band members have said this single was their highest selling in the USA in terms of physical copies sold.

This song followed on from second single Make Love Like A Man which reached Number 36 in July and Let's Get Rocked reaching Number 15 in May.

Boyz II Men were at Number One on this day with their single 'End Of The Road' which had broken a record at the time for spending 13 week at the top of the Hot 100.

Other rock entries in the Top 40 were Bryan Adams at 29 with the Mutt Lange produced 'Do I have To Say The Words?', Gins N' Roses at 35 with 'November Rain' and Bon Jovi at 39 with 'Keep The Faith'.

1992 - Phil Collen Interview Quotes

"It's a silly love song thing about missing your girlfriend. That's what it was about when I first wrote it. I was in Australia and my wife was in America somewhere. Then we changed it a bit. I wrote all the music, except for the bridge, which Mutt did."

Early 1990 - Joe Elliott Interview Quote (Album Update)

How many other songs are done? (apart from Tear It Down)

"Three. 'Tonight', 'Stand Up (Kick Love Into Motion)' and one tentatively called 'I've Never Wanted Something So Bad' ."

1992 - Joe Elliott Article/Interview Quotes

"'Heaven Is', 'Stand Up', 'Have You Ever' are all relationships between a man and a woman, but a more '90s way. The frustration thing always works well in lyrics. 'Have Your Ever Needed Someone So Bad' Somebody out there is going to say, "Yeah, I have". 'Make Love Like A Man' was Phil's idea, as was 'Have You Ever'."

October 2004 Band Quotes

Phil - "I had the first line of the verse kicking around. And Mutt suggested we make it into the chorus. Sitting next to that man and absorbing his genius for so many years was a pleasure. I’m glad it’s not one of those lame gratuitous ballads."

Joe - "One of Phil’s babies. The strummed guitar intro that he came up with really makes it. We’re not one of those bands that only want to impress other musicians: we’ll play beneath our capability for the sake of the song. The first line ‘Here I Am. I’m in the wrong bed again’. Sets up the emotion of regret. Which is something that everyone of us goes through now and again."
