Def Leppard played a run of Canadian shows in June 1988 on the Hysteria tour and rare interview footage is available.

Joe and Rock appeared on Much Music TV during the tour (in Montreal or Toronto) and talked about Rick's 1984 car accident and recovery.

A two minute clip from a longer show has been posted by Much Music.

Longer versions of this show can be found on YouTube but they are not in as good quality as this clip.

Rick Allen/Joe Elliott - June 1988 Interview Quotes

Joe - "We were luck in a sense that while Rick was...unconscious."

Rick - "Comatose."

Joe - "Comatose. You know in hospital, we actually had something to be getting on with otherwise we'd have gone mad. Just wondering is this guy gonna live, is he gonna die. But we had drum tracks down on tape. We had things to do. So we just made a decision like the day after we'd heard the news of the accident that we were gonna go straight back in the studio and get on with it. There was no point in us hanging around the waiting room of some hospital. It's like you know you'd kind of go a bit mental. So we just went back to the studio and got on with it. And we just literally waited for the phone call to see what was going on."

Rick - "It was good that they did that because when I first went to hospital they said ah you'll be in here for at least six months. You know you can forget about the band. You can forget about this, that and the other. So I was out of the hospital within three and a half weeks. And then two weeks after that I was back in Holland working with the band again. So I never really sort of let myself get down or depressed you know."

Rick - "Well it wasn't really like that. The band wouldn't let me leave. I broke my right arm really badly. So what they had to do. They had to put this big piece of foam rubber at the bottom of the bed. So I could push against it you know so I didn't slide down the bed. I had my stereo set up and started listening to some of the music that I'd been listening to before. And I realised tapping on this piece of foam that you know maybe I could make something of this. And this is sort of exactly what I did. I just figured out the pedal sort of system to play what my left arm used to play."

Joe - "He's the only man in rock and roll with a foam drum kit."
