The Joe Elliott Show - Quotes

Show Intro

"Evening all and welcome to the Joe Elliott show right here on the wonderful Planet Rock. This week the show is coming to you all the way from Chicago in Illinois. From a venue called Tinley Park. These day it's known as the Hollywood Casino, but for years it has been Tinley Park. A vast outdoor 28,000 seater venue which later on this evening will be packed to the rafters. It's gonna be a wonderful night. And this is gonna be a wonderful show. I mentioned last week the fact Chicago is the home of the Blues. I shall be playing precisely NO blues music tonight because this is a rock show. And I prefer my music, for this week at least, to rock like this. This is Generation X."

Generation X

"Back in 1977 when that song was released. That band was actually quite despised by a lot of the Punks because they actually wanted to do Top Of The Pops. Which I always thought was the point of being in a band. You wanted to play live. You wanted to do Top Of The Pops and if you were lucky you'd also get to do The Old Grey Whistle Test as well. But that's the way it was in 1977. That was Generation X. Featuring of course a guy who would go on to massive solo success later on in the 80s, Billy Idol, with a song called Your Generation."

The Who

"And how can I not play this after that."

"And before that The Who with My Generation which of course followed the opening song Generation X with Your Generation."

Down 'n' Outz

"You see what I did then?. You never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Or even a Golden Opportunity. Three songs tied together by the word generation. The Down 'n' Outz debut album back in 2010 was called My ReGeneration. The song an old Ian Hunter classic called Golden Opportunity."

Spirit

"Right let's see what all the fuss was about shall we. You may have read over the last couple of months that there's been a court case where the song Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin sounded a little too similar to a song called Taurus by Spirit. So a courst case entailed which dragged Jimmy Page and Robert Plant all the way to Los Angeles. Thankfully it was thrown out. Had it gone the other way. It could have opened such a can of worms that everybody would have been suing each other. in fact they may even have sued themselves. So let's see what all the fuss was about. This is Taurus by Spirit. Which is followed by a song that does sound like Led Zeppelin and with Jimmy Page's blessing."

"And before that Spirit featuring Randy California on guitar with the song that supposedly influenced Stairway To Heaven. But I do believe that if they thought they were gonna win anything, especially 40 odd years after the event, they were living on another planet."

Def Leppard

"From the current Def Leppard album that is the admittedly Led Zeppelin influenced Battle Of My Own. And why not they were a huge influence on Leppard. They still are."

Show Outro

"And that my friends is about it for this week. It's been a pleasure as always. I shall be back with you next week from a place called Grand Rapids in Michigan."

"So until then what can I say other than this. Out of Europe twice in one week. Come on Wales!. Well done Northern Ireland. Nice try. Well done the Republic. Nice try. As for the England team. Wow. I've never seen anything so bad in my life. I hope this last hour has helped ease the pain. If not maybe this one will just push it over the edge. A bonus track these days on the album Kitsch. This from 1976 is the Heavy Metal Kids and Delirious. Which we're not. So until next week see ya!."
