Hysteria 1987.

Def Leppard's classic Hysteria album was certified as 9 times platinum in the USA 27 years ago on this day in 1989.

The band's fourth studio album was released on 3rd August 1987 and took 49 weeks to reach the top spot in the country.

It replaced Van Halen's 'OU812' at the top of the US charts on 23rd July 1988. It would go on to spend 6 weeks at number one (including a 3 week stint in September) and 133 weeks in total on the chart.

On 4th January 1989 it had sold 9 million copies after 6 hit singles including the Number One hit 'Love Bites'. The song was still at Number 90 in the chart on this date.

In the week of 4th January 1989 the 'Armageddon It' single was at Number 12 (it eventually peaked at #3).

The 'Hysteria' album itself was at Number 7. It was still in its second run inside the Top 10 which began on 4th June 1988 and would not end until 25th March 1989 when it fell to 12 - 43 weeks.

The first run inside the Top 10 last for 34 weeks (late August 1987 to late April 1988).
