Monday, 3rd August 2015

Hysteria 1987.

Def Leppard released their fourth and most successful studio album 'Hysteria' 28 years ago on this day in 1987.

The album was released on the same day world-wide - 3rd August 1987. It was the first to be released after Rick Allen's car accident in 1984 when he lost his left arm.

'Hysteria' went straight in at Number One in the UK album charts. Their first ever number one album.

It would reach the top spot in the US Billboard Top 200 chart almost a year later in July 1988 and reach Diamond status (for 10 million + sales).

Six UK singles were released from the album and seven in all around the world. The various promo videos would later be released on the 'Historia' VHS/DVD in July 1988.

'Animal' was the first single in July 1987 and the success of the album meant the last single would be released almost two years later in January 1989 (Rocket). The fifth Top 20 single in the UK. The title track also made the Top 30 at number 26.

In the USA the band got their first number one single a few weeks after the album reached the top with 'Love Bites' in October 1988.

The album has sold over 20 million copies to date. 12 million in the USA alone as of August 1998.

Phil Collen - 'Hysteria' Postcards from 'Work It Out' Single 1996

"Our most popular album to date."

"It was Mutt's idea to make a rock version of 'Thriller' - rock songs that were hit singles. We were fortunate enough to have seven strong singles from this record."

"Mutt Lange was very influential here. We seemed to be making a video every few weeks."

"We were in the top ten all over the world at one time or another."

"I do think Hysteria was a kind of a sparkling star on our career. You know, icing on the cake and all that. But I think this is the best thing we've done since then. It's called Def Leppard. It's really diverse."
