The venue is located next to the River Tyne (north side). Also not far from the 02 Academy venue and Newcastle football club's St. James' Park stadium.

It was opened in November 1995 as Newcastle Arena.

From 1997 to 2004 it was known as Telewest Arena.

From 2004 to 2019 it was known as Metro Radio Arena before becoming Utilita Arena Newcastle.

Joe did a short snippet of the Lindisfarne song 'Fog On The Tyne' before 'TSB'.
