Def Leppard rocks crowd at Alerus Center By Wade Rupard

The opening song said it all.

As Def Leppard kicked off their show Friday night with "Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)," they wanted to do just as the title suggests.

"Are you ready rock?" Joe Elliott screamed into the mic, with the crowd responding by screaming back.

The five-person band made up of Joe Elliott (vocals), Vivian Campbell (guitar), Phil Collen (guitar), Rick "Sav" Savage (bass) and Rick Allen (drums) played through a 17-song set full of their rock hits in front of the thousands that packed into the Alerus Center.

"Animal" and "Let It Go" followed the opening number, which got the show off to a raucous start and the crowd on their feet immediately.

That energy continued throughout the band's set, which included the band's only No. 1 single "Love Bites," "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" and "Rocket."

Elliott, the lead singer, slowed things down in the middle of the set to play an acoustic version of "Two Steps Behind." During the song, he encouraged the crowd to join the band, leading to the crowd singing along with each note.

The band, which will release a self-titled album in October, closed the main set with "Hysteria," "Let's Get Rocked" and their most well-known song -- "Pour Some Sugar On Me." "Rock of Ages" and "Photograph" concluded the evening's show in the encore.

Before Def Leppard hit the stage, Styx entertained the crowd for nearly an hour.

Styx opened their set with a trio of their biggest hits -- "The Grand Illusion," "Too Much Time On My Hands" and "Fooling Yourself." A highlight of the 10-song set list included Lawrence Gowan solo at the keyboards for a medley of "Rocket Man," "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Dock of the Bay" before the band lashed into "Come Sail Away" to close the main set. The two-song encore included "Rockin' the Paradise" and "Renegade."

Tesla opened up the night's festivities with a 35-minute set, which showcased the band's hard-rock music. With their guitarist wearing a green Fighting Sioux hockey jersey, the band played some of their most noteworthy songs, including "Love Song and "Modern Day Cowboy."
