Def Leppard bassist Rick Savage appeared on the Jon Holmes radio show on BBC 6 Music in October 2012 and the audio is still available.

You may remember Sav was interviewed in the run up to the station's Sheffield Sunday special. In honour of his 54th birthday here is the link to hear the interview again - which has actually been available since it was done.

Sav spoke to Jon on the phone from his home in Dublin and talked about the history of the band, switching from guitar to playing bass, performing on stage, the big production sound, touring with Poison in 2009/2012, meeting Tom Cruise/the Rock Of Ages movie and his performance of PSSOM. He also took part in the regular spoof news quiz Ken Bruce Master.

A short clip talking about the Tom Cruise version of PSSOM is available below. Follow the link to hear the full 7 minute interview again.

Jon Holmes - Rick Savage Interview Quotes

Rock God?

"Oh I don't know about that. I think that's a - at my age, ageing rock star I think is more appropriate."

How long have you been doing this?

"Well, we first started. I first met our singer Joe in 1977. We played our first show in '78 and we got signed to a record company and released our first album in 1980."

"In fact I was the original guitar player and we could not find a bass player to save our lives and we had Pete Willis who was the other original guitar player. And I just said listen I'll play bass guitar until we find a bass player. And I guess we never found one so I still - I kept the gig!."

"That's why I went to bass because Pete was better than me at the time and I would have absolutely no chance of getting anywhere near six strings within the current line-up because Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell are probably two of the best guitar players in this field in the world."
