Nights With Steve Marston - Phil Collen/Simon Laffy Interview Quotes

Working Together Again After So Long

Simon - "Phil and I were in a band called Girl before he joined Def Leppard so we've known each other for 30 years now and we're great friends. We've always had a great camaraderie and we just absolutely you know are thrilled - we love the experience or working in Manraze it's such a pleasure for us it really is you know we run to the studio whenever we're working together and it's a real outlet creatively. It's a real adventure every time and you know it's an exploration we get to do all kinds of things that you know maybe Phil is a little bit restricted with Def Leppard so we always try and open the door and try and push the boundaries as much as we can with it. And in this instance we're delighted with the end product with I Surrender. It's just come out as a really beautiful track. Something we're very proud of you know and it fulfils all of the requirements of Manraze for us."

New Manraze Album

Phil - "I'm learning guitar again. Obviously I can still play in my head but I'm having to go through the motions. I'm doing physical therapy and all this stuff with my hand to get all the kind of suppleness and stretching back into play. So next January is the first time I'll be able to play properly or that's when I'm supposed to so we go and do some more Manraze stuff in London and then February we'll be doing some Def Leppard stuff. No touring for a little while unfortunately. Is something does come up I think we'll have to get a guest guitar player in and I'll just be the singer because I literally can't play guitar it's very weird after 30 odd years of playing guitar I have to kind of take a back seat at the moment."

Vivian's Health

Phil - "Absolutely yeah. He's in remission. You know if anyone didn't know he had Hodgkin's Lymphoma which is a form of cancer. He got the news just as we were starting the VIVA! Hysteria residency you know in Vegas so he's been worrying about that obviously for so long but he's beaming. I saw him last week. He's doing great. He's in remission the doctor's gave him the OK so no he's in a great place in really good shape right now."
