Music Backstage - Phil Collen Interview Quotes

Ded Flatbird Origin

"Well the name we called it Ded Flatbird Joe remembered it from back when Rory my son was born. He's 23 now so he was born in New York in 1990 and his Mum was going to le mars classes and stuff with - you know one of the other mothers there was going Your husband plays in a band right? What is it? and she said it's Def Leppard and she goes Ded Flat Bird? And you know it was hilarious and so Peter Mensch who was our then manager and also Rory's godfather and his then wife Melissa who's Rory's godmother said OK we have to make some T-Shirts up so Mensch had all these T-Shirts made up. It was very tongue in cheek, Ded Flat Bird and this image on it and kind of goofing around."

Band Names

"So Joe just brought it up you know 23 years later and said let's call it Ded Flatbird and so we actually took on different characters. In the dressing room there was all these front covers of Rolling Stone magazine and we'd go 8 across, you know for me I'm the 8th of December so I'd go 8 across and 12 for December for the other way and two words off the front cover and Tracy Chapman was one of them and Chingy, the Hip Hop artist so I was Chingy Chapman. Rick Allen was Camp Out cause it something about some political thing and something - anyway he was Camp Out. Fleetwood Beck you can see where they're coming from that was Sav. And Sav on the last show actually came on stage with a wig and fake moustache and didn't tell anyone. Looking over I was like oh my god and he really kept, he acted the part without laughing it was great, it was so funny."
