Phil Collen Discusses VIVA Hysteria! Setlist Plans

Tuesday, 20th November 2012

VIVA Hysteria! 2013.

Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen was interviewed on 15th November by Noise Creep and talked about the VIVA Hysteria! setlist plans.

Phil says the band plan to play their greatest hits segment before doing the full 'Hysteria' album (not after as suggested by Joe's previous comments). In a first for the band they would take a short intermission break between sets. With (at least) over 63 minutes needed to play the full album this could make the whole show time well over two hours.

A few choice quotes about the show can be read below. Follow the link to Noise Creep to view the videos in full which also feature performance clips from the Gerson Institute show and talk about the donation made after the guitar auction.

Noise Creep - Phil Collen Interview Quotes

"We've never played Hysteria in its entirety. In fact Vivian's never played some of these songs. So we had a little rehearsal the other week me Rick and Vivian up in LA and they're so hard some of these songs because there's so many guitar parts, so many vocals and it's actually doing the vocal parts while you're playing guitar. That's the Mutt Lange trademark in it like crazy. I'm really looking forward to it."

"I can do Vegas in a day you know. Then I'm OK. (live there? go home?) I think so, I think a bit of both. I think most of the time we'll stay there. If I can get the dog up there. If Shaq can come."

"We're gonna kick off with a greatest hits set to warm us up because Women's a weird song to start, Rocket is the second song. Pour Some Sugar On Me three or Animal it's a bit of a weird running order. Great for an album but not for a live show. So I think the fact that we're actually gonna do a greatest hits set then maybe have a little break which we've never done, you know go off - an intermission per se or something and then come back in and just kind of make it a little bit more theatrical. That's why I'm really into it the idea of it cause it's theatre, it's new for us. "

"I think so, Rick phoned me the other day and he said do you realise what an undertaking this is. We've all been listening to the songs and they're really complex. There's so many counter rhythms and we want to get it as close as we can, some of the songs. Some of them we're gonna have to kind of busk it a little bit. But for the most part yeah."
